"Wake up!"

On September 4th, 2001, System of a Down released their masterpiece 'Toxicity.'

No one could have guessed that an album as bizarre and abrasive as 'Toxicity' would break the Armenian-American weirdos out of the metal underworld and turn them into global rock stars. Released just days before 9/11, the record actually seemed doomed in the paranoid and repressive climate that set in after the calamitous terrorist attacks. And yet, despite the hurdles, the album found its audience — and a huge one at that.

Simply put, the music was just too good. This is SOAD's magnum opus, a pinnacle of alternative metal that more than satisfied heavy music's need for lyrical nuance and political valence at the tail-end of nu-metal's era of excess. The fact that a song like "Chop Suey!" — with a chorus about "self-righteous su***de" and angels who deserve to die — became the cultural phenomenon it did is a minor miracle, and while that Grammy-winning hit stands as System's signature song, hands down, the album that surrounds it is similarly breathtaking.

The jump-scare heaviness of "Prison Song." The chanting-chugging "Needles." The Kool-Aid-man-crashing-through-the-wall intensity of "Bounce," "Shimmy" and "Psycho." The screaming-toward-the-sky gravitas of "Forest," "Toxicity" and "Aerials." And crucially, the way all these songs gel together into one compelling call to action against senseless violence, environmental destruction and capitalist exploitation. 'Toxicity' is a classic. Period.

On Monday, August 31, 2026, a Las Vegas jury found Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder for orchestrating the 1996 killing of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur.
The verdict was reached after only three hours of deliberation, concluding a highly anticipated weekslong trial and marking the first-ever conviction in a case that remained unsolved for nearly 30 years.

Davis, 63, was convicted of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon with a criminal gang enhancement. Under Nevada law, an individual who aids or abets a murder can be convicted of the crime even if they did not personally pull the trigger. Following the verdict, Davis indicated that he intends to appeal the decision. He now faces up to life in prison.
Prosecutors showed that the drive-by shooting was a retaliatory strike.
Hours before the murder, Tupac Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight assaulted Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, in the lobby of the MGM Grand casino.
The state presented Davis as the “on-ground, on-site commander” who obtained the fi***rm, put it into a white Cadillac, and spearheaded the hunt for Shakur.
The prosecution’s case rested heavily on Davis’s own extensive public admissions, including a 2008 recorded police interview and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, where he openly detailed his presence in the front passenger seat of the shooter’s vehicle.
Davis’s defense attorney, Michael Sanft, argued that Davis was a storyteller who fabricated and embellished his involvement for money and notoriety. The defense heavily focused on a total lack of physical evidence, pointing out that the state had no surveillance footage, phone records, or DNA tying Davis to Las Vegas on the night of the crime.🫶
