Our heartfelt congratulations to Anne Carson for her much deserved award of the Nobel Prize in literature. We still feel overwhelming gratitude after all of these years to her for coming to Binnacle as one of our first (maybe our very first???) author events. The magic of this is still so palpable, it was a truly special evening on so many levels. And yes, we still have the original flier taped up on our walls here in the shop as a precious memento.

These books have been requested by people who are incarcerated at one of the many prisons in New York State.
There are nearly 1700 people incarcerated within the city of Beacon alone, less than two miles away at Fishkill Correctional Facility.
Approximately 6000 people are incarcerated at the 5 prisons located within a half-hour drive of Beacon.
Since February 2020, the Beacon Prison Books Project has sent over 10,000 books to incarcerated folks, sponsored by bookstore patrons like you.
If you would like to cover the cost of one or more of these books, just write a note, bring your selections) up to the counter, and we will take care of the rest. And if you sponsor something this week, you’ll double your impact.
Thanks to a generous grant, every book sponsored starting Sunday Oct 4th through Saturday the 10th will be matched. You’ll be supporting Banned Books Week and helping us clear our backlog.
The grant is good for up to $1000 in matching funds, which will go directly toward getting more books to readers, and reducing the wait times for request fulfillment. More info at the link in our bio!

Guess what?? It’s finally Halloween with Story Screen 🎞 and we’re so pleased to be collaborating with our old friends and new ones, too.
We’ll be reading CARRIE by Stephen King before a screening of the film and dinner down the street at Dave the Butcher on Thursday, October 22nd. Copies of the book are available in the shop, and if you mention Story Screen you’ll get 10% off your purchase of CARRIE. The screening at 7:30 is free to attend, and we’ll be getting together around 5 to chat about the book. Dave the Butcher’s kitchen will be open until 10pm.

How grateful we are for the texts that you’ve left us and the particular reflections you’ve inspired in us, the seemingly small and commonplace, and the momentous alike.

‘“I am no scientist,” she says of herself.
“I am a wanderer with a background in theology and a penchant for quirky facts.
As a thinker I keep discovering that beauty itself is as much a fact, and a mystery, as the most gruesome parasitic round-worm. I consider nature’s facts - its beautiful and grotesque forms and events - in terms of their import to thought and their impetus to the spirit. In nature I find grace tangled in a rapture with violence; I find an intricate landscape whose forms are fringed in death; I find mystery, newness, and a kind of exuberant, spendthrift energy.”’

“SEPTEMBER 2, 1969”
In the evening there were flocks of nighthawks passing southward over the valley. The tall sunflowers stood, burning on their stalks to cold seed, by the river. And high up the birds rose into sight against the darkening clouds. They tossed themselves among the fading landscapes of the sky like rags, as in
abandonment to the summons their blood knew.
And in my mind, where had stood a garden straining to the light, there grew an acceptance of decline. Having worked, I would sleep, my leaves all dissolved in flight.
