Today's saw chain is generally available in four cutter profiles. Full chisel, micro chisel, semi chisel, and square chisel.

Full chisel cuts quickly, is moderately easy to file. Best used in clean cutting conditions.

Micro chisel also cuts pretty quick, and is fairly easy to file. It's best used where fast cutting is desired, but edge retention is desired. Best used in cutting conditions where some dirt may be encountered.

Semi chisel is the slowest cutting on this list, but also the easiest to file. It excells at edge retention in dirty or abrasive cutting conditions. Best used for cutting in dead hardwoods, or situations where your wood is dirty.

Square chisel is by far the fastest cutting chain on the list. It is difficult to file and requires specialized files. It's ideal for cutting in clean softwoods and hardwoods, but can dull very quickly in dirty or abrasive conditions.

Whatever chain you run I can get it cutting again, with a file or grinder.

A modern saw chain is commonly found in three sequences. Standard, semi skip, and skip. Standard is great for most applications but when you start running longer bars semi and skip are great options. Fewer cutters lead to higher chain speeds and less cutters to file.
