🌿 Spring gardens get their start in fall!

Here in the Lowcountry, fall is the best time to plant shrubs. Cooler air means less heat stress, while warm soil gives roots time to grow and establish before next summer’s heat.

The difference is happening underground, a fall planted shrub gets a head start while a newly spring planted shrub is just settling in!

🍂 **October Garden Checklist for the Lowcountry** 🍂

Fall is our *second* spring here in Beaufort, and the best time of year to plant! Here's what to focus on this month:

🌿 **Plant shrubs, trees and perennials now.** Cooler air and still warm soil let roots settle in before winter, so plants are stronger come spring and summer heat.

🪵 **Mulch new plantings.** Add 2–3 inches to hold in moisture and block weeds, keeping it about 6 inches away from trunks and stems.

🌱 **Get ahead of winter weeds.** Mulch beds and apply pre emergent in mid-October, then again 8–10 weeks later.

💧 **Water smarter.** Established plants need less water as temps drop, so dial back your irrigation and check for leaks. New plantings still need regular watering while they root in.

🧹 **Clean up beds.** Remove diseased leaves and spent foliage so problems don't overwinter.

🧪 **Test your soil.** Fall is the perfect time to fix pH before spring growth. The Clemson Extension can test it for you!

🌿Happy Monday LowCo Gardeners!

With rain in the forecast and temperatures in the low 70s today, it’s a good time to talk FALL ROOTS! 🌧️

Fall is one of the best times to plant shrubs here in the Lowcountry. Our mild soil temperatures allow roots to keep growing as growth above ground slows, helping plants establish before next summer’s heat.

✅ Check the soil before watering. Newly planted root balls need consistent moisture, but shouldn’t stay soggy.
✅ Add 2–3 inches of mulch, keeping it away from stems and trunks.
✅ Choose plants for your yard’s sunlight, drainage and mature space, not just today’s blooms!

Experienced gardeners know you don’t always shop for what looks the prettiest right now , you also shop for what’s going to be incredible next season!

To the untrained eye, a dormant Hardy Hibiscus might not look like much. A few bare stems can easily be overlooked when you’re surrounded by plants blooming their hearts out.
