Christine Ryan Designs Take advice from an opal: live a colorful life, keep your inner fire burning, stay full of wonder. Ryan made me a ring as an expression of his love.

This act of service and gift inspired them to start a jewelry business. Our jewelry is a reminder of love to compliment your life.

For this collection, the opal’s intricacy does not stop at the edge of the stone. It continues into the silver. That means you are not only choosing a beautiful opal. The entire ring gives your eye something to enjoy.

Hard silver has been shaped into looking softer and more textile-like—not with the usual hammer marks, cable or rope, but through lace-like curves, woven lines, height, depth and shadow.

Each ring carries the intricacy of its opal into the surrounding silver, giving your eye more than one beautiful place to land.

These stacking rings were originally sold individually. You could choose one, two or ten. There was no correct answer and certainly no sign instructing you to complete your sacred triad.

But over and over, you chose three.

One ring is beautiful. Two still look like two separate rings. But the third changes the relationship between them. Now your eye sees the colors as one complete design.

You knew intuitively that the third time is a charm.

Vivid means strong, bright color, but it also means having the appearance of vigorous life or freshness. The word comes from the Latin vivere, which means to live.

That’s surprisingly close to how my customers describe opals.

One woman told me, “I don’t like it when they are dull. They want to be vibrant.” Another said the opals seemed to come alive in the light. And one of my customers describes herself as a true product of the 1970s. She said the color and vibrancy of opal are what speak to her because the conservative jewelry she used to own never really felt like her. With opal, she said the moment always feels fresh.

Opals are stronger than most people think. They’re around a six on the Mohs hardness scale, which puts them in a very reasonable place for everyday jewelry. Pearls, for comparison, are closer to a three. And glass like the stuff we trust to sit between our face and an interstate full of dump trucks is in roughly the same neighborhood as opal.

You want to actually wear the thing you love during your real life, don’t you?

If we can trust our windshield, we can trust an opal.

Same with wildflowers.
Same with peacocks.
Same with Australian opals.

Apparently nature and I have similar feelings about understated.

Children get the 64-count box of crayons.

Adults get taupe.

I’m not sure who negotiated this arrangement, but I’d like to reopen the contract.

Because almost everything we associate with life is colorful.

Green grass.

Fresh flowers.

Blue water.

A really good sunset.

Bring a bunch of tulips into a messy kitchen and somehow the entire room feels fresher.

The dishes are still there, unfortunately.

You just added color.

And I think jewelry can work the same way.

Australian opal is one of the most colorful gemstones on earth, yet a lot of people still think “white October birthstone.”

Then they see the blues, greens, reds and oranges and realize opal has been terribly undersold.

If the goal is something that feels alive and interesting, i want to speak for itself.

Somewhere along the way, we decided neutral meant sophisticated and color needed to calm down.

Nature apparently missed the memo.

Nobody watches a pink-and-orange sunrise and thinks, “Lovely, but perhaps a tasteful greige.”

Healthy grass is green. Wildflowers are colorful. Peacocks are basically showing off professionally.

And there’s a reason for that.

The word vivid means bright, strong color, but it also means full of life.

Those ideas have been connected for a very long time.

Which is exactly why I love Australian opal.

A lot of people still picture opal as a polite little white birthstone. Then they see one flashing blue, green, orange and red and realize nature had considerably bigger plans.

That’s why I keep these stacking rings simple.

The silver holds the stone.

The color does the interesting part.

Nature had every opportunity to make opal beige.

It declined.
