On this day in 1991, Nirvana released “Smells Like Teen Spirit” as the lead single from Nevermind.

The label initially expected “Come as You Are” to become the album’s major crossover song. Instead, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” gathered momentum and helped bring the Seattle alternative-rock scene into mainstream popular culture.

Its distorted opening riff, explosive quiet-loud dynamics and unforgettable music video became closely associated with the musical shift of the early 1990s.

The single celebrates its 35th anniversary today.

Otis Redding was born on September 9, 1941, in Dawson, Georgia.

Drawing from gospel, rhythm and blues and Southern soul, Redding developed one of popular music’s most powerful and recognizable voices.

His recordings included “These Arms of Mine,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” and the original version of “Respect.” His performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival introduced his electrifying stage presence to a wider rock audience.

“(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was released after his death and became the first posthumous No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100.

As Queen’s lead vocalist, pianist and one of its principal songwriters, Mercury helped create songs including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Somebody to Love,” “We Are the Champions” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”

His voice, theatrical instincts and ability to connect with enormous audiences made him one of rock music’s defining performers. Queen’s 1985 Live Aid appearance remains one of the most celebrated live performances in popular-music history.
