UPDATE: I didn't think this was going to be necessary, our landlord has been good to us. Yes, he has had to raise rent, he has to cover his expenses. His identity is irrelevant to this post.
It is with a heavy heart that I write this.
The Mission Center serves as Ohio County’s clothing bank, and we operate entirely through volunteers and donations. If you have ever visited our store, you know we keep our prices extremely low so families can afford the clothing they need.
We also provide clothing at absolutely no cost through our voucher system. When donations are available, we give away medical equipment and supplies, furniture, and other household necessities to people in need.
Unfortunately, our low prices do not bring in enough to cover our monthly expenses. Our heating and air-conditioning systems are extremely old and inefficient, which makes our gas and electric bills very high. For quite some time, my husband and I have personally covered whatever the store could not. We simply cannot continue doing that. We are struggling to meet our own bills and no longer have the extra money to cover the store’s expenses.
Right now, The Mission Center urgently needs financial help. Our rent is due, and we only have a portion of it. Beginning in November, our rent will increase to $1,000 a month, and there is no way the store can cover that amount through sales alone.
To put that amount into perspective, our monthly rent could be covered by:
• 100 people giving $10 a month
• 40 people giving $25 a month
• 20 people giving $50 a month
• 10 people giving $100 a month
It does not have to be just one of those amounts. A combination of monthly donations—whether it is $5, $10, $25, $50, or more—could make the difference between The Mission Center remaining open or having to close.
This is why I have been working so urgently to find funding to purchase the building. For The Mission Center to remain open, we need dependable monthly donors to help cover the rent and operating expenses, large donations toward purchasing the building, or a combination of both.
If we cannot get the financial support we need, The Mission Center will have to close.
That is the bare truth. I am not saying this to pressure anyone or make anyone feel guilty. I am saying it because this community deserves to know exactly where we stand.
