✨ Introducing the newest and littlest magical guardian of our historical apothecary! Meet Nemue (or Nimue)! 🐈‍⬛

💫 We have been officially claimed by a tiny, grey, 6-toed sentinel! She arrived via the Cat Distribution System Sunday with no warning or prep! This Swiffer-furred phenomenon magically showed up at my window crying and shaking while I was answering emails, and she immediately instituted new requirements for mandatory snuggles and playtime!
Check out dem feetz! 🐾

💚 😂 Please note: Apothecary production might see slight delays due to an abundance of mandatory kitten snuggles and a drastic increase in supervised quality control as she learns the ropes around here… plus vet visits and all! 🤠

We appreciate your patience while our tiny guardian adjusts to her new forever home. Watch the clip and check out her giant polydactyl mittens!!

I’m trying to be better about posting and making videos! lol 😜 I made a video on ginger 😬🙌🏼. Hope you like it! 💝

Here we are making “Deep Tissue Balm”

08/07/2026

Fresh vs. pre-ground: does it actually matter? 🌿 Here is our take! 🪴🌿🍂🍁

Enjoy a peek into our lab and processes and come along as we prep dried ginger! 🫚
🧪 There is science behind this!
Once ginger 🫚 is powdered, it starts losing potency. So we powder it fresh, right before it goes into the balm — the same way it’s been done since long before mortars had motors.
(Say that five times fast- I dare you!) 😜

🪴Don’t worry- we still use the old fashioned mortar and pestle a lot - infact Izzy🐞🌞🦋 was just using it just before filming to powder frankincense! 🤦‍♀️ I problably should have filmed that too! 😬

Recipe History: 📚
This recipe actually started as a tummy tea from an 18th/19th-century midwife’s diary (yes, a real historical figure — Martha). Digging into her garden and native herbs, we realized we could add other traditional apothecary goodness to really amp 💥 up the properties and make it into a balm — this happened so many eons ago already 🤣 (it’s been in our shop a loooong time- but I’m trying to be better at videos and posts!)

So long story short- we adapted her recipe into this deep tissue balm, honoring the original while adding to it and bringing it into our modern world.

Old recipe. New use. Same good herbs.🪴 💝

(Other Martha’s recipes - including tea are in our shop too — link in bio!) 🌿

I was magically given a gift this morning! 🪄🦄🧝‍♀️💝

☀️ Apparently the universe (or someone upstairs ✴️) approves of my ongoing research into the chemistry and development of 1940s liquid stockings or leg makeup! 💄

I started putting together a video of my findings for you all and amongst writing a script and paging back and forth to make sure my info was correct- the universe dropped me a little gift 🎁

Flip though to see!
Also it’s teeny tiny! As I was packing up to head to my inside office - I closed one of the books and it was just there! No idea how it magically arrived 🙌🏼 but also it’s so pretty! Just look at those colors!

Also PS: the chemistry and history of liquid stocking is fascinating! Seeing the 2nd photo makes me really excited because this one was sooo early in the scheme of things! More later…

Things to come! Tell me what you think of my magical gift! 🎁

I made a reel this morning! Check out our new formulary from the 1950s- let’s chat about what’s changed from old school cosmetic formulas and preparations! …. Hint it’s a lot! 💅💄😜

08/03/2026

📖 A new cosmetic formulation (time capsule) book just arrived at LBCC Historical- this time from the 1950s!!! ( just like the hairspray we recently found) 💅💕

I think people often imagine historians as having a perfectly organized checklist:

1. Need book.
2. Find book.
3. Read book.

In reality, for me it’s more like:

1. Search for liquid stockings…
2. Accidentally discover a cosmetic formulation manual I didn’t know existed.
3. Spend two weeks hunting down an original copy and obsessing over the possible treasures hidden inside.
4. Completely forget about liquid stockings because now there’s a new shiny book to read…which inevitably leads me to another rabbit hole. 😂

🕵🏼‍♂️ Honestly, that’s how most of the discoveries at LBCC Historical happen. I set out looking for one thing, and I end up finding another.

One question leads to another book, another recipe, another advertisement, another patent…and before I know it, I’ve uncovered something I wasn’t even searching for.
One of my favorite things about collecting these books isn’t just the formulas ( but I love them just the same)—it’s seeing what the cosmetic industry believed was “the future.” 🌎

A few things that stood out: We chat in the video check out the comments! I’ll share a bit about what I cover in the video:

1950s new and improved: 🍹💄💋
1. How do we now perfume products
2. What does the 1950s think about past preservation methods
3. New and improved filling equipment and production. Something never change! 😜
4. Petroleum jelly. (Vaseline.) - 👀 I may rant about this…. Just a little

🪩 Flip through to see close ups and the mystery item!!

1. 💚I rarely come across manufacturer loose face powder in a heavy glass jars—mostly they seem to be cardboard or compacts, making this pretty green Ruth Rogers Hollywood green metal-topped glass jar a major win.

✨ plus it is advertising cool new science! 😜 “a scientific blend of ingredients together with material obtained in part from sun ripe avocados a California (can’t read the word😅 maybe ‘fruit’?) … free from lead and other harmful mineral matter…” (swipe to read it - I messed with the clarity so how fully you can read most of it)

I love the labeling on the glass jar too! As well as the green lid!! Who wants some “avocado science face powder?”
