Our Story
Tides & Tailouts was founded in 2013 by Sara McKenzie and Ralph Brooks in Beaverton, Oregon. We first met on an early spring afternoon in a local fly shop, went fishing together for the first time a few days later on the Deschutes River, and since then have fly fishing together in a myriad of fresh and saltwater locations. And if we can’t go fishing, we’re probably tying flies or working on fly rods, including bamboo. This ‘addiction’ and love of the sport is what eventually led us to establishing Tides & Tailouts as a means of focusing our interests and sharing our talents, knowledge and love of fly fishing with others. The Pacific Northwest seems like the perfect area to live and work. Of course, mere mention of the region to the average fly fisher conjures up visions of chrome-sided steelhead. But in addition there are at least five species of salmon in regional rivers. And our backyard lakes and rivers hold at least eight different trout species, small and largemouth bass, tiger musky, northern pike, carp and pan fish. The saltwater of the Pacific Ocean offers yet another set of fly fishing opportunities varying from salmon and trout to lingcod, a variety of rock bass, surf perch, and even albacore tuna. The fly fishing opportunities are spectacular!! About the Owners
Sara is a relative newcomer to fly fishing and tying but her enthusiasm for these activities and knack for quickly picking up the techniques required to excel in the sport is truly exceptional. She is currently on staff at River City Fly Shop in Beaverton, OR, and has been commercially tying flies for several years now. Sara has fished fresh and salt waters across the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Ralph has been fly fishing, tying flies, and building or rehabilitating rods since he was a kid. There aren’t many fresh or salt waters in the United States that he hasn’t tested over the years. He has cast over the waters of New England, the Appalachians, Ozarks, Upper Midwest, Rockies, Southwest, Alaska and, of course, the Pacific Northwest. Outside the US borders has fly fished from Canada to the Caribbean, and areas of Africa, South America, Europe and Eurasia. Ralph is currently on staff at the River City Fly Shop in Beaverton, OR.
