Books on Becker has been blessed by Mother Nature. We have catalpa trees, spider plants, aloe veras, Mexican petunias, Maximilian sunflowers, Mother of Thousands, geraniums and much more. We're open Tuesdays thru Saturdays noon to 5. We'll also be there at 11 am tomorrow for a few hours. 513 Becker Ave in the Belen Art District. This is the perfect time to plant trees.

This Labor Day weekend we thank all of you for your expertise, your dedication, and your passion. The work you do makes a difference for all of us every single day. We also thank all of our volunteers at Books on Becker who help keep our 501c3 bookstore running smoothly!

In Memory of Dolly...Today while volunteering at Books on Becker a patron who is a regular to our little shop was telling my husband and myself about a show he has been watching called "The Booksellers." It is about a group of people who work in a New York bookstore and the camaraderie they share which is often quite comical.

The patron's phone rang; he took the call, listened, and then hung up. With a look of great sadness he spoke and his words were..."Dolly Parton has died." At that very moment, a second patron walked into our area holding a biography of Dolly Parton. I said to her that she must have heard that Dolly had died...She had not. The four of us just stood without saying a word. Camaraderie can also be the sharing of great sadness in a little bookstore in Belen.

For the past thirty-one years Dolly Parton has overseen and funded much of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library...to date 332,411,218 new books have been gifted to children every month for the first five years of their lives. Every so often, one of these books makes its way into Books on Becker after it has been read aloud numerous times by a parent with a child on their lap. The outgrown book is then passed on to us so that it makes its way into the hands of another child. For me, Dolly will be remembered not only as a world class singer, songwriter, actress, and philanthropist but also as a champion for the early literacy development of our greatest resource...our children.

Another great "Back to School" night at the Valencia County Resource Center. It was "one for the books" and the Friends of Belen Public Library was there.

The Friends of Belen Public Library and their 501c3 project, Books on Becker, gave away truly great books to kids at National Night Out. Thanks to all the Friends and Youth Crew Volunteers who helped make it happen.
