Two of Cups

The Rainbow Tarot, our deck for August, shows beautiful depictions but it rarely shows the symbolism attached to each card in the minor arcana. The Rider-Waite deck shows a couple with celebratory glasses beneath a symbol denoting the Caduceus of Hermes.

No, this symbol is not the one traditionally associated with practice of medicine--that one is the Rod of Asclepius. Leave it to the U.S. Army Medical Corp mistakenly adopting it in 1902 and the darn thing stuck. 🙄 Our Caduceus, strangely enough, does not depict healing through love between the couple on the card.

What it does depict is negotiation. Um...yeah.

The Caduceus is about finding neutral ground via respectful communication. It is about each of you sharing from the depths of your true values and beliefs to arrive at diplomatic truce and treaty. It is about sitting down and talking through the really hard stuff and still being able to forge a path forward.

Today you may be faced with heavy, much-needed conversations whose sole purpose is to create a bridge you and another will walk upon together. Open ears are as necessary as open hearts. Choose your words wisely.

Six of Cups & Five of Cups

A two-fer today because yesterday was just...not.

And an interesting pair, indeed.

I've taken to sitting on the swing in our backyard every night (with the dog sprawled on the lawn in front of me), waiting for the cool-down and emptying my head. Last night, as I watched dragonflies zooming around, memories flooded me, spurred on by the way the light passed through a certain set of trees or the way the wind chimed the leaves. At first, as in the Six of Cups, these memories were sweet--fleeting childhood moments, summer vacations, quiet evening times when the only sound was the radio broadcasting my father's baseball game.

Then came the Five of Cups, with all the nostalgia, the piercing pain of loss, the knowledge that those days and those people are gone and live only in fragments of memory.

If you are feeling and experiencing these moments lately, know that memory is there to serve you, to remind you that the pain of loss means you loved well, that your life has been full of blessings and heartaches, and that you can revisit those days and those people any time you want to gain relief, respite, and release.

King of Swords

Strategy. Calm, cool game plan. Intellect and intelligence. If you haven't watched the series, "The Last Ship" on Netflix, you probably should. Captain Tom Chandler, played impeccably by late Eric Dane, is the epitome of the King of Swords. Never loses his cool--at least in public or in front if his crew. Super smart, super strategic, decisive, confident, and certain.

He is not, however, warm and fuzzy. He has the emotional depth of Dr. Spock, at least until the last season (there are five, and he's worn out). You will find a rock here, but no soft spot. That does not mean he has a lack of compassion or zero emotional intelligence. He just saves that for private moments when he is in a room or in the middle of the ocean, alone with himself.

You may need to be Captain Chandler today. That means hard decisions, decisive action, firm boundaries, and letting some teenage (or adult) knave know that you are, in fact, Large and In Charge. This is not the moment for diplomatic negotiation--this is a moment for a "yes, sir" or "yes, ma'am" from your crew.

Do not belay your orders today. And go look up "belay" and feel nautically superior as you stand at the helm of your ship.
