📜 When coins become a voice for the people… history gets even more fascinating.

One of the things we appreciate most about exonumia is that it often tells stories that official coinage never could. This remarkable Middlesex Spence Conder Farthing (Dalton & Hamer 1085) is a perfect example.

The reverse depicts Adam and Eve beneath the powerful inscription:

“MAN OVER MAN HE MADE NOT LORD”

A bold statement advocating equality at a time when political reform and individual rights were hotly debated throughout Britain.

The obverse answers with biting satire:

“AM I NOT THINE ASS”

A crowned king, complete with scepter and oversized spur, rides a creature with the head of an ass—a clever and daring critique of authority. During the late 18th century, privately issued Conder tokens became more than just emergency small change. They provided engravers and political thinkers with an opportunity to spread ideas, challenge power, and spark conversation in a way that circulated from hand to hand across the country.

It’s incredible to think that something as small as a farthing could carry such a powerful message. More than 230 years later, these tokens remain snapshots of the social and political climate of their era, reminding us that history isn’t only written in books—it was struck in copper.

A Piece of Louisiana’s Banking History 💵

Long before Federal Reserve Notes filled our wallets, banks across America issued their own paper money—and each note told a story.

This beautiful $5 Obsolete Bank Note from the Citizens’ Bank of Louisiana is a stunning reminder of that era. Issued in New Orleans during the mid-1800s, it represents a time when hundreds of state-chartered banks circulated their own currency, each with unique artwork, security features, and local history.

History You Can Hold. 🇺🇸

Not every collectible is a coin.

Some are tangible reminders of the moments that shaped our nation.

This remarkable 1889 Inauguration Centennial Participation Badge commemorates the 100th anniversary of George Washington’s inauguration as the first President of the United States. Held in New York City on April 30, 1889, the centennial celebration brought together veterans, dignitaries, military units, and citizens from across the country to honor the man who helped define the American presidency.

Unlike official U.S. Mint issues, pieces like this fall into the fascinating world of exonumia—medals, badges, and tokens created to preserve historic events. These pieces often had limited distribution and were intended to be cherished as keepsakes, making surviving examples increasingly desirable more than 135 years later.

🔥 A Cornerstone of the Lincoln Cent Series 🔥

Some coins aren’t just rare—they represent a defining moment in American numismatic history.

The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent marked the debut of Victor David Brenner’s iconic Lincoln design, the first circulating U.S. coin to feature a real historical figure rather than an allegorical image. But its story took an unexpected turn.

Brenner placed his initials, “V.D.B.”, prominently on the reverse of the coin. Public criticism over the size of the initials led the U.S. Mint to remove them after only a short production run. Even more significant, the San Francisco Mint struck just 484,000 pieces before production ceased, making the 1909-S VDB one of the lowest-mintage regular-issue Lincoln cents ever produced.

That combination of historic significance, controversy, and genuine scarcity transformed the 1909-S VDB into the undisputed “key date” of the Lincoln cent series. For more than a century, it has remained a must-have coin for collectors building a complete Lincoln set.

🏦 A Piece of Massachusetts Banking History 🇺🇸

Before the Federal Reserve and the paper money we carry today, local banks across America issued their own currency. This beautiful Series of 1902 $5 National Bank Note was issued by the First National Bank of Malden, Massachusetts (Charter #588)—making it both a piece of U.S. monetary history and a tangible connection to New England’s past.

National Bank Notes were produced from 1863 to 1935 under the National Banking Acts. While they were backed by the U.S. government, each note proudly displayed the name of the issuing bank, creating thousands of unique designs from communities across the country. Every surviving example tells the story of the town, the bank, and the people who once used it in everyday commerce.

The reverse features the iconic “Landing of the Pilgrims” vignette, one of the most recognizable and artistic designs ever placed on American currency.
