I sent an email out today to my customer base sharing a little more about a new collection I am launching in July.

These rings are part of that collection, and none of them are on my website, and won’t be until the launch. Plus, good things take time. And apparently, so do I.

Many years ago, a fellow jeweler and dear friend, who is no longer with us, walked over to my booth at the Fremont Market and handed me a necklace he had made for my wedding day.

He brought me to tears with his generosity and thoughtfulness. I can remember instantly falling in love with it.

Maybe that’s why making bridal jewelry is one of my favorite things to do. When someone asks me to create a necklace and earring set for their wedding, I know it’s more than jewelry. It’s a small part of a much bigger story.

I love knowing that something I made will be there for the photos, the memories, and one of the most important days in someone’s life.

The details and sentiment matter, and being trusted with both is something I never take for granted.

I had the chance to sit down with Julie on her podcast, and gurl, we got into it. Running Martini Metal Craft since 2011, opening Martini Mercantile, the baby steps, the juggling of multiple jobs, the things that most business people don’t tell you, and the stuff that’s kept me going. This morning I was doom scrolling and landed on the latest drama: UConn’s women’s basketball coach, Geno Auriemma, going off on South Carolina’s Dawn Staley. And just like that, I was back in it. Not the drama, but the feeling.

My own NCAA days. Division II. Freshman year, we made it to the Final 8, only to get knocked out by Delta State, who, of course, went on to win the whole thing. My sophomore year, we made it to the Sweet 16.

I wasn’t the star. In fact, I barely played. But I remember the feeling like it was yesterday. The adrenaline, the heartbreak, the locker room energy, the unspoken pact that you show up no matter what. And the camaraderie? That was the glue that kept you coming back.

Turns out running a business feels similar. Some days you’re in the Final 8, riding momentum. Other days you’re out in the first round, wondering who let you be in charge of anything. But you keep showing up and betting on yourself, even when the scoreboard isn’t in your favor.

This time, I’m on the bench, in the starting lineup, and coaching from the sideline all at once. Every day is game day, and running a business? Turns out it’s just my own version of March Madness.

I realized something slightly “offensive” this year.

For the first time in my entire life…I haven’t watched any March Madness. There’s been no yelling at the TV or emotional investment, and here’s the kicker…I don’t miss it.

Turns out, I had quietly been donating hours of my life to something that gave me exactly nothing in return. So instead, I’ve been in the studio, attempting to catch up on making inventory.

It’s usually around this time of year I find myself making silver balls and round objects for jewelry, and then it hit me. I didn’t quit March Madness. I just upgraded my madness.

Most days (especially today), if I’m being brutally honest, I fantasize about a cosmic reset button. Like, one big black hole that vacuums up all the power-hungry nonsense. Because this? This version of reality? It’s completely off and irrational. It’s never made sense to me. This has to be a joke, right? One that we’ll all wake up from and say, “That was a scary trip I never want to take again.”

That’s my lead up to, “Hey, I now have these long and sexy earrings on my website.” Totally makes sense, right? Yeah, I didn’t think so either, but I went with it anyhow.

When you own two businesses, “vacation” is a loose term. There’s always something that needs attention. Something that could be planned, fixed, or promoted. It’s hard to justify “play.” So sometimes you have to turn work into play, like going to the Tucson Gem Show.

Imagine acres, maybe miles, of stones. Rows and rows of turquoise, opals, spinel…things I didn’t even know I needed until they were staring me down under fluorescent lights. I walked into each show thinking I’d be strategic, but instead I followed my gut. Which, in the past, has gotten me into trouble. This time, that kind of trouble turned into exactly the spark I needed to light a fire under my bum.

Being there reminded me why I started doing this in the first place. Not for the marketing plans or the constant problem-solving, but for the thrill of the find. The energy. The creative buzz of seeing something raw and imagining what it could become.

I came home lit up and went straight to the bench. And from those Tucson finds, there are several new works taking shape, including these cool marquise turquoise studs set in sterling silver. I love the movement in this style.

Turns out, a little desert heat was exactly what I needed to get fired up.

A customer came to me with a turquoise cabochon and an amber ring: both meaningful, both holding their own stories.

Her first thought was to combine them into one ring, but instead, we went another direction.

We removed the amber and refined the original band so it could stand on its own. Then we took the turquoise cabochon and built a clean stacking ring that can be worn solo or layered right alongside the original band.

Now she has two rings that can live together or apart. Same history with more flexibility.

I’ll be honest, custom work can intimidate me. There’s emotion tied up in these pieces, and that’s weight you feel at the bench. But when someone trusts me (💯) and my creative intuition, it calms my nerves.

If you’ve got pieces that mean something but don’t quite work anymore, sometimes the answer isn’t forcing them together, but instead, it’s letting each one become fully itself.

I typically outsource repairs and custom pieces to my fellow goldsmith friends, but every once in a while a request comes my way that I say, “Sure. I’ll do it.” I might struggle during the process but in the end I’m really happy it happened - - this one especially.
