ATTENTION: Your online audience is not an indicator of worth or relativity within your niche. Just think of Dolly Parton and the amount of good she did and her resume. Was her impact far and wide? Definitely.

But, there are many “Dolly Partons” in this world doing amazing good and impacting more than they know. But don’t wait for validation or the fear of failure to stop you from entering into the arena (as Teddy Roosevelt would say). Don’t believe you need to be bigger or be invited to start the thing which you want to do.

Better to risk and fail than to never have tried. Better to live in our lane doing the hard work even when it feels like it’s not paying off.

This is a second year seedling I can’t get enough of.

12 years. Oh how glad and happy when we meet. No more cold iron shackles on my feet. I’ll fly away.

My brother W***y and I were able to sing this song at my Grandma Rainey’s memorial service and my Aunt Debbie got a recording of it. I think we practiced once before and went for it. One of my greatest joys was to have this piece of music of him and me as we come from a musical family. When W***y died, I didn’t know this recording existed and that week I began to weep more thinking we weren’t able to record any music together. God’s kindness amidst tragedy.

12 years and the sting of those first couple years has faded. You are dearly loved and remembered W***y.

It was great fun to be part of Puget Sound Dahlia Association 50th Dahlia Show. I always learn so many things being on a judging team, and it’s actually something I thoroughly enjoy. I’ve encountered many gracious people on my judging teams and hope to be as gracious and generous as them. I was able to win best of triple WL section for my Hollyhill Daydream and glad to be beat by my friends Flowerly Farm ~ Shari & Dave Kruyswijk

It was also so nice to have my girl with me and see some friends while doing this work. Special thanks to Erin Erin Pedack for bringing home my dahlias on Sunday. Also check out Erin’s beautiful waterlily Falls Helena. She won for floating waterlily and her presentation was majestic in my opinion.

First year seedling. This gets a pink flagging tape signifying a keeper.

This is a seedling I brought to the Fraser Valley Dahlia Society show on Saturday for 1-10 bench. The 1-10 bench is for undessiminated dahlias, meaning they have not been introduced and the breeder is taking it there to get some input on how well it would do in the show circuit. Not only the show world, but it’s helpful as the judges are looking at the criteria of form over anything else.

Anything above a 4 is considered worth holding onto. Of course, if something is given a 3, it might be worth listening to your gut. This WL was given a 5.5 and won a blue & best of type. Suffice to say, I’ll be keeping this third year seedling to build up stock.

I’m a terrible flower farmer, if you can even call me that. Funny when the words stumble out of my mouth answering, “what do you do?…” “I have a dahlia farm,” because I feel a fraud. Maybe fraud is too strong a word.

When walking the dahlia field in the early morning hours, dew dripping from the leaves, there is a penetrable gut punch looking at the state of affairs in terms of size these dahlia plants behold. Their size feels pathetic.

Can you relate? Is your field not measuring up to what you envisioned? Or is it not the same as what you are seeing from every other flower growers page?
