We’re honored to sponsor two incredible local marching bands, and they both showed up and showed OUT at their percussion contests!

🏆 Academy Bee Band took 1st place in their division!
🥈 Belton High School Marching 100 brought home 2nd place in their division!

This review is part of our series honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, where we’re highlighting and celebrating stories by Hispanic authors.

Horror, history, and yearning? Yes please. I honestly don’t even know what genre to call this book. Historical horror romance? Either way, I loved it.

Vampires of El Norte is set in Matamoros, Mexico during the U.S. invasion of Mexico, and I connected with this story on a personal level because Matamoros is where I was born. It was such a cool experience reading a story set in a place that is part of my own history.

Nena and Néstor are childhood best friends who are separated after a tragic event, and Néstor spends nine years believing Nena is dead. Then war brings them back together, and now they have to figure out who the real enemy is.

And the YEARINNGGGG Néstor has for Nena?! Y’all. I was in a chokehold. 😂

The book gets spooky and gruesome at times, but what I really loved was how it uses the vampire story to explore colonialism and the violence of invasion. It gives the story so much more than just a new take on vampires. I love when a book can give me history, horror, romance, and a little emotional damage all at once. This one absolutely worked for me.

This review is part of our series honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, where we’re highlighting and celebrating stories by Hispanic authors.

Y’all know I love a historical horror story, so when I saw this was set in the 1960s, I was immediately interested. Muñeca is a sapphic gothic tale about a witchy woman who becomes the caretaker of a cursed heiress. It has that eerie, gothic atmosphere I love, but there’s so much more underneath the horror.

I really enjoyed how Cynthia Gómez weaves in themes of colonization, classism, and racism. The setting and history aren’t just there for atmosphere. They really add to the story and give the horror another layer. And obviously, I am always going to show up for a witchy woman and a gothic curse. 🖤
