We know it’s a little colder than Labour Days past, but what better way to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall, than curled up with a book and something warm to drink? We honestly can’t think of anything better!
(We might be a little biased.)

First new book haul of the month! Swipe to see some of this weeks selection.

‘The Maiden and Her Monster’ by Maddie Martinez: A dark fairy tale centered around a cursed forest, a church that condemns the stories of the forest, and a murder. The perfect sapphic, dark fantasy tale to kick off fall.

‘The Honjin Murders’ by Seishi Yokomizo: From the best selling author of ‘Murder at the Black Cat Cafe’ comes another thrilling tale of murder on a wedding night, and the amateur detective determined to solve it.

‘Crossing the Dark Sea’ by Emily Wilson: From the most celebrated translator of our time, comes a look at the pieces behind the translation. Wilson explores how her and others make word choices, the frustration of never fully capturing a translated work, and so much more.

Three New Signed Editions: We have three great new releases that are all signed copies! Pop by to grab one before they are all gone.

‘Blightfall’ by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson: A group of soldiers are sent on a mission to protect a diplomat as they journey to Blightfall. This remote planet is said to have human inhabitants, but what they find is much darker.

‘Scion’ by James Islington: The ‘The Will of the Many’ author is back with a cyberpunk thriller where killing the ultra wealthy who have figured out how to live forever, is a regular job. But like any other job, it has its challenges.

‘Hawk and Sparrow’ by Ayana Gray: Vesper Evans is a tenacious young reporter but while covering a gala, a very wealthy man is murdered. The prime suspect? A man named Maximillian Kite. Max makes Vesper an offer: figure out who did it and clear his name, and he will pay her more than she’s ever dreamed of. To investigate, they must pose as a courting couple and dive into the world Vesper loathes.

’Slewfoot’ by Brom: This special edition comes just in time for fall and spooky season.

It’s the last new book haul of August! Swipe through to see what we are excited about this week.

‘The Unsettling of America’ by Wendell Berry: This is the 50th Anniversary re-release of the beloved collection of essays with a new forward from the author.

‘The Black Wolf’ by Louise Penny: This best-selling novel is now finally out in paperback.

‘The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State’ by Jill Lepore: Renowned writer Lepore tackles one of the biggest issues of our time: technology and how it has embedded itself into every facet of daily life.

‘Big Little Truths’ by Liane Moriarty: The sequel to ‘Big Little Lies’ we never thought we would get is here! This story follows the same cast of characters you loved from the first book, but now the kids are teenagers, and with it, they bring teenage problems.

‘Dèy’ by Edwidge Danticat: An incredibly powerful novel reckoning with trauma, family, and what it means to call somewhere home, especially as a multi-cultural person.

‘Daggerbound’ by T. Kingfisher: A cozy romantasy set in the same world as the book before it, ‘Swordheart’. This mlm romance follows Edmund as he tries to deliver a relic from one temple to the next when he gets attacked on his journey. He uses the relic to spare his life, and discovers that a knight is trapped inside, having been cursed into it. Starting out reluctant allies, they soon become friends…or maybe more?

‘Helbound’ by Stephanie Binx: After an accident leaves Marian with a pile of debt she can never pay off, she starts dying for a living….literally. Demons roam the earth with no recollection of how they got there or why, and people like Marian die and go to Hell to help them uncover the secrets. All for a price, of course.

‘Fall of Civilizations’ by Paul Cooper: Based on this hit podcast, this tome follows the fall of different empires from the beginning of time up to now.

Stop in and grab whatever caught your eye!

We are thrilled to host the book launch for local author Marina Richie’s latest book, ‘Feathered Forest: Aloft with Birds in Ancient Trees’ on September 8th.

Marina Richie is an award-winning nature writer with a passion for birds and wild places. Her first book, ‘Halcyon Journey: In Search of the Belted Kingfisher’ received multiple awards, and bridges the divide separating people from nature through prose and poetry.

In ‘Feathered Forest’, Richie entwines the lives of birds with a hidden vertical world of wild trees. A narrative of perception change, memoir, and kinship, ‘Feathered Forest’ is a soaring ode to birds and wild trees. Birds are guides to intricate and imperiled communities thriving at every level, from understory to midstory to overstory. They steer us to cool havens within multilayered, centuries-old groves that are critical refugia in a time of climate crisis. Their songs and flights show us what we must protect for the future of threatened birds, forests, and humankind.

Join us for a reading and conversation to celebrate the launch, pick up a copy of the book, and stroll with her down to see the southward migration of Vaux’s Swifts roosting each night in the brick chimney at the Boys and Girls Club - just a few blocks away.

The event is free and open to the public! We hope to see you there.

‘Up on Cove Mountain’ by Earl Swift: In 1990, a young man hikes the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia, hoping to find clarity and peace in his life. What he doesn’t expect is a nice couple he meets on the trail to be murdered. In 2024, in his 60’s, he returns to the trail, contemplating what lead to the deaths of that young couple.

‘Togetherness’ by Rowan Hooper: What if the idea of “survival of the fittest” was wrong? Evolutionary biologist Rowan Hooper takes a different approach and shows how nature actually thrives on collaboration…and why we need to do the same.

‘The Calamities’ by Chuck Wendig: Hidden in the world we all know, is a much darker world where half demon/half human beings called fiends deal in souls and other dark magic. The Mayes family is one of the most powerful fiend-ish families, and Mourning is the wayward son suddenly called back to fulfill his familial obligations. What unravels is a story for the ages.

New Kids Books: Quite a few fun, new kids books this week!

This morning while we were out running errands for the shop, we picked up an extra trunk full of water for our community members displaced by the fires ravaging our region. Warm Springs is facing a severe water shortage and needs our support! If you have any discretionary income, we hope you will join us in giving what you can. Please swipe to see a list of urgent needs, fundraising campaign links, and suggested drop off locations. Our neighbors at Wonderland Chicken @ Worthy Brewing Downtown are collecting items and coordinating drop offs to the folks who need it most. There’s also a benefit concert happening tomorrow with RiseUpandGroove and lots of other ways to offer support and mutual aid - and we encourage you to find an avenue to take part.

Our hearts are with the people, animals, and land that are surrounded by fire during this time, and our gratitude is with the brave folks out there on the frontlines.
