Author Event: Sara Vladic, The Dangerous Shore
Saturday, June 13 at 6:00 PM
Bookshop Benicia | 636 First Street, Benicia, CA
Bookshop Benicia is honored to welcome New York Times bestselling author Sara Vladic for an evening celebrating her new book, The Dangerous Shore: How a Motley Crew of Scientists, Mobsters, Double Agents, Retirees, Volunteer Pilots (and a Boy Scout) Stopped the Invasion of America.
During World War II, many Americans believed the war was being fought far away, across Europe and the Pacific. But in 1942, the danger came much closer to home. Enemy submarines prowled just off the U.S. coastline, sinking ships within sight of crowded beaches. Oil tankers burned so brightly offshore that their flames lit the night sky.
In The Dangerous Shore, Vladic reveals the largely forgotten story of the war fought along America’s coasts and the civilians, scientists, volunteer pilots, intelligence operatives, engineers, and unlikely allies who helped defend the nation during one of its most vulnerable moments.
A starred review from Booklist calls The Dangerous Shore “a substantial and revealing examination of the myriad dangers and challenges in a less-known theater of WWII.”
Sara Vladic is a New York Times bestselling author and filmmaker known for her deeply researched, cinematic works of history. Her previous book, Indianapolis, examined the sinking of USS Indianapolis and became a critically acclaimed bestseller.
This event follows the community celebration of World War II veteran and USS Indianapolis survivor Harold Bray’s 99th birthday earlier that day.
Join us for an evening of history, storytelling, and conversation at Bookshop Benicia.
