Lisa Senetar is a Kentucky native and self-taught artist who started making jewelry as a fun and fashionable way to relax during graduate school. PhbeaD (a playful combination of the words Ph.D. and bead) began in 2007 and is currently based out of her home studio in Paint Lick, KY. Ultimately inspired by pressed flower art and foraging for natural materials, she combined her love of science with art by handcrafting resin jewelry with actual insect wings. After a year of experimentation, she developed a proprietary double barrel, twice-mixed, vacuum-sealed resin technique to embed the wings into jewelry. Each piece is meticulously sealed to make an air-tight, water-tight envelope around the wing that is resistant to wear and tear. All of the colors and patterns are 100% natural; She does not add any dyes or extra pigments. She uses alot of different insects in her work including butterflies, moths, grasshoppers, cicadas, dragonflies, and dobsonflies. Many of the wings are found locally- literally a dead bug off the ground that has been collected by her, her family, friends, or people she meets at shows. Lisa loves that her work involves a community effort and encourages people to get outside and connect with nature. What began eighteen years ago as a simple, creative outlet has grown into a thriving, central Kentucky-based brand that is recognized as “where science meets art.”
