I've been playing drums for 45 years; my favorite kit was a 1976 Slingerland 8 piece. I am also a master woodworker; I have been in the trade for over 35 years. Over the decades my kit was getting run down from years of gigging and just everyday abuse. The outer shell of my kit started to delaminate, and I figured it was time to purchase a new drum set, however Slingerland was long out of business
, so I was going to have to buy another brand. One day a friend of mine said "Why don't you just build your own kit (jokingly)". I thought long and hard about what he said, and I decided to give it a try. I was already well known for my wooden beer mugs I have been making and thought I could apply the same technic just on a larger scale, it worked out amazingly. My drums are built using a technic called segmented turning, they are completely solid hardwood. There is no plywood shell or vinier, what you see on the outside is what you see on the inside. I started with just the snare drum to see if it was going to sound good and to my surprise it blew away every snare I ever Owned. So, I moved on to the bass and so on. The Hardware on my Slingerland was still in great shape so I reused it on my shells. This was in 2017 and since then I have built several snare drums for friends, and I've sold a few also. I decided to start building drums for sale on a regular basis, so I created WoodFella Drum Co. There are companies that build solid drums, and they are all high dollar companies, however none are doing anything like my shells. WoodFella Drums are truly one of a kind, and I never build the same drum or kit twice. WoodFella Drums could be a family heirloom that you pass down the generations.
