Tap, treated, or bottled water: which one is actually better? πŸ€” In WC&P's fall issue, our Chief Science Officer Jess, digs into what household water testing reveals across bottled water brands, tap samples, and home-treated tap samples nationwide.

The short version? Treated tap water held up as well as bottled, untreated tap ranked highest in potential toxicity, and contaminants like lead often came from household plumbing itself. But the big takeaway is that treatment only works if it's matched to what's in your water βœ…

Most DBPs form when chlorine meets organic matter in the water. Chloronitramide is different. It forms on its own, as chloramine breaks down in the distribution pipes on the way to your tap.

That distinction matters. It is a contaminant that appears after the treatment plant has done its job, in water serving roughly a third of US homes. The first toxicity study published this year, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has it on the draft list of contaminants up for future regulation.

Our Chief Science Officer Jess and Sr. Research Scientist Sam talked with Wirecutter about what that means for where water actually gets treated.

Chloronitramide is under consideration for EPA regulation, and it’s widespread in US tap water. Here’s what we know about it so far.

VOCs are masters of disguise 🎭 You won't see them, smell them, or taste them, but they can still end up in your drinking water. And because they evaporate out of water, cooking and showering can make them an even bigger risk 🚿

That's because VOCs are often harmful through inhalation, not just ingestion. Research has even linked certain VOCs to a range of health concerns, including cancer, so the only way to know if they're in your water is to test for them βœ…β

PFAS are called "forever chemicals" for a reason: they don't break down naturally, they don't evaporate, and most water treatment plants aren't designed to remove them. That's why they've been detected in water supplies across the country 🚱

For facilities, contractors, and environmental professionals, our PFAS Water Test provides the data you need to make informed decisions.
