Here’s why: not all hydrangeas bloom on the same type of wood.
🌿 Cone-shaped flower heads = think panicle hydrangeas (like ‘Limelight’). These bloom on new wood, so they can handle pruning in late winter or early spring.
🌸 Round, mophead-style blooms = often bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla). These commonly bloom on old wood, meaning next year’s flower buds may already be sitting on those stems. Prune too aggressively and you might accidentally prune away your entire flower show. 😬
So before you grab those pruners…
Look at the flower shape first.
Cone = leave it alone.
Round = cut it down.
Okay, technically there are exceptions because hydrangeas apparently enjoy keeping gardeners humble. 😂🌿
Save this for pruning season! ✂️
