🍂 3 Plants for Fall Color (That Aren’t Mums)!

Mums may get most of the attention this time of year, but flowers aren’t the only way to bring fall color into your landscape. Here are three plants that put on their own fall show:

🌿 AMSONIA ‘BUTTERSCOTCH’
Why we picked it: Golden-yellow fall foliage gives this perennial another season to shine after its blue spring flowers fade.

Growing tip: Skip the fall cutback! Leave the foliage standing for its fall color, then cut old stems back in late winter or early spring. Regular deadheading isn’t necessary.

The basics:
☀️ Full sun to part shade
📏 About 2–3' tall and wide
🌼 Blue spring flowers + golden fall foliage

🌾 LITTLE BLUESTEM
Why we picked it: This native grass develops copper, bronze and reddish fall tones, plus seed heads that add texture into winter.

Growing tip: Leave it standing through winter! Cut old growth back to a few inches in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

The basics:
☀️ Full sun
📏 About 2–4' tall, depending on variety
🍂 Fall color + winter texture

🎨 HEUCHERA | CORAL BELLS
Why we picked it: Depending on the variety, colorful foliage can bring shades of burgundy, purple, caramel, green and more to the fall garden.

Growing tip: Remove spent flower stalks as needed, but skip a full fall cutback. Clean up damaged foliage in spring as new growth appears.

The basics:
⛅ Sun to part shade, variety dependent
📏 Typically 8–18" tall
🍃 Grown for long-lasting foliage color

Plant scouting: Lambeau edition 🌿🏈

While everyone else is getting ready for Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin, Noah is apparently checking out the plant beds. 😂

Even on the road, he couldn’t pass up the chance to admire the landscaping at Lambeau Field.

And the timing is pretty fitting… because our crew will be doing a little planting of our own inside Notre Dame Stadium this Tuesday! 👀🌱 Stay tuned!

Until then, we need to know: Who else finds themselves checking out the landscaping everywhere they go?

Your fall garden needs these ⬇️

ASTERS! 💜

Mums are a fall favorite for a reason — but asters are another beautiful way to bring late-season color into your garden.

🌿 Many of the asters commonly grown in our area are perennials, giving you color beyond just one season when planted in suitable conditions.

🐝 Asters are also known for their value to pollinators. Their late-season blooms can provide nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects when many summer flowers are beginning to fade.

🌎 And what about native asters? Michigan is home to several native aster species, including New England aster and smooth blue aster. Just keep in mind that not every plant sold as an “aster” is necessarily a Michigan native.

So don’t choose between mums and asters — make room for both! 🍂💜
