I spent the day mowing and trimming the yards. It take two days to do a good job on them all. It’s been so wet and cool in SE Shawnee Co this spring that the grass has been winning. The bees look really good. Any colony that was strong by April 10 had nearly a full deep super of honey by Mother’s Day weekend. The nectar flow is a little slower right now but everything is set for the good flow we get in early June.

In my opinion, you are never too young to learn that you hate preparing comb honey supers. Ashton, Raegan and Kyndal put wax foundation into 50 shallow comb honey supers on Sunday. They did a great job. The bees will get to work on these about May 1.

I’ve been working hives this afternoon. The average strong colony has 7-10 frames of bees and 4-5 frames of brood. I observed drone brood in most strong colonies either on the frames or between the boxes. All colonies have fresh pollen and some have nectar coming from somewhere. Losses will be about 8% for the winter. Overall, I’m very pleased.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting Renate Rea, owner of Hillcreek Market in Lecompton, KS. Melissa Urich and I had lunch and then installed honey in the retail portion of the market. They have a nice selection of Kansas made products from SMR BBQ, Topeka BBQ Shop, and a few others I recognized.
