Continuing with the Tamiya 1/72 F-14D.....starting to grunge this bad boy up....This is one of the most fun steps for me when you just let it roll and see what happens.

I usually do these pretty clean, but I'm going to beat the hell out of this one....Make the crew chiefs in the audience get some OCD :D

Let this dry for awhile and then come back to see if it needs adjustments....that's the great thing about oils...you have literal days to fix any mess you made.

Now onto the ordinance

A little technique tip on a Monday...

I noticed that the Tamiya 1/72 F-14D comes with Decals to represent the scoring on the wings from the swing mechanism...and Honestly I thought i could do a little better....So i went ahead and replicated the effect using oils...and I think it came out way better!

What will you need?

1) Artists white spirit (this is very mild and wont attack paints like MRP).
2) Some oil paint of your choice (I picked a grimy looking graphite color)..I put it on some cardboard to absorb the oil out of the paint.
3) 3 brushes....1 sharp point one to make the oil dots, 1 flatter clean one to blend...and a larger flatter one to pull the streaks.

And now the steps to achieve the blend

1) You can opt to use a clear coat...but because I use MRP, I find no need for a clear coat, so this is right on the paint. If you use Acrylic I would protect it first.
2) Take the middle flat brush and slightly dampen the whole area with the white spirit...this is important because if you leave it dry, the streaks wont pull to the edge of the wing. Don't have it to wet either because the streak will just blend into a mottle mess. Just dip the brush in the spirit and dab it on paper towel once...that seems to take enough of the liquid off.
3) Now use the round small brush and dot on the paint along the edge, on the edge that you want to pull from.
4) Once that is done, take your large brush, dip it in some white spirit and then blot most of it off on a paper towel....proceed to gently pull the dots back to the edge of the wing with a sweeping motion so it mimics the way it would be pulled when the wing swings.
5) Once that is done, remove the Masking tape...you notice it has left a hard edge...if you like that, then keep it as is.....for me it seems a bit artificial so i went onto the next step.
6) Take the middle flat brush, again dip in white spirit, blot off most of it, then work the oil into a random pattern on that hard edge....it takes very little working to just break the line. Stop when you are happy.
7) enjoy your handywork :)

The color will lighten as it dried...so if its too dark, then mix in some white as you want to....Also if you mess up...just flood the area with white spirit and wipe it off gently with a paper towel and try again....you have at least a few hours to decide if you like it before it becomes hard to remove.

I have been running low on some core MRP colors lately...so if you have been waiting on stock then do not fret! The latest MRP shipment is on its way from Slovakia to my shop here in Berryville, VA as we speak!

What makes this shipment so special? It contains the FULL LINE of the MRP Aqua acrylic paints! every single one (yes including the primers) plus their excellent thinner (which works crazy well with Tamiya X and XF paints too). Oh and it brush paints great too.

So if you have always wanted to try MRP, but were pushed away by the lacquer (you really need to try the lacquer!!!) now you can try the best paint in the hobby and save your lungs :) (the lacquer is fine really, just use a mask and extractor)

Along with the Aqua I will be restocking some of the popular Lacquer colors lines

- RAF WWII colors
- Luftwaffe WWII colors
- US WWII colors
- Japanese colors
- US modern colors

Watch this space for when the stock hits!

Time to get to the clears, adding the panel lines, starting with some decals etc...

onwards and upwards...this kit is absolutely beautiful compared to that Kinetic trash...looking forward to finish this one :)

First layers of paint down on the 1/72 Tamiya Tomcat....decided to do the Low Viz VF-213. Already looks pretty interesting on the variation.

Because the decals are supposed to compliment the greys, I am using the matching Tamiya LP paints from the kit instructions to make sure the decals don't disappear because another brands Light Ghost Grey is a light different shade wise (yes I have had that happen). Tamiya LP is my second choice after MRP and they are wonderful to use with their own Lacquer thinner.

Time to load up some different shades and start working those panels!

Starting to build a Mirage 2000N from Kinetic.....my first Kinetic kit...

And honestly, its a massive turd.....I thought Kinetic was one of the better brands, but this has the vibes of a 1980's Revell kit in terms of fit and detail.....

Is this how it is for all Kinetic? or are their Mirage's a bit different? I know that there are turds in almost every brand...I was going to build this one for a local competition but it has me thinking to just bin it.....because I am going to have to straighten some parts...like the wings also, which are warped....Lets see how it goes.

What is your general experience with Kinetic kits?

Calling it done! This 1/48 Eduard P-51D was a joy to build....Model built by myself, photography by myself and AI assisted lighting and background editing (I am no photo editor sir....)

This was painted with MRP the same as the P-47 done last month....Still the best paint in the hobby right now :)

On this build i wasn't quite happy at the way i represented the painted wings...I think they are still too NMF for my liking...i just was scared to really dull it down to look like paint instead of metal....Next one I will try more aggressively to represent Silver paint on the surfaces that require it....so lessons were learned.

I am still happy with the build and loved the way the 3d Printed parts slotted right into the places that they needed to go, unlike the MiniArt kit that needed some doctoring.

The decals on this kit were quite a challenge for me as it was the first time I did the decal fil removal....which was quite nerv wracking but i got through it...was it worth it? Time will tell but the decals were quite old (this kit is from 2021) and the film looked all blotchy so i had no choice. I think if i had the option and the decal film looked even, I would not remove it.

Anyway, enjoy the build! Next up is finishing the Monogram Scarab!
