Steyr Arms USA

Steyr Arms USA Official Steyr Arms, USA Steyr Arms, Inc. is the U.S. manufacturer, importer, and distributor for Steyr Arms hunting rifles, sporting rifles, and pistols.
(321)

Founded in 1864 by industrial pioneer Josef Werndl, the first rifles produced had a “Mannlicher stock” also known as a “full stock” because it extended the entire length of the barrel. This new design enabled Steyr Arms to quickly establish a reputation for producing unique and incredibly accurate fi****ms. From the original bullpup design of the AUG, to the Scout rifles integrated bipod, and the

patented trapezoidal sights of the M9 pistol, that reputation for innovation remains today. The prominent AUG/A3 M1 bullpup rifle is manufactured in-house at the U.S. headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama. While our newest icons like the HS. 50, SSG M1, Pro Hunter II, and A2 MF line of pistols are imported from the main factory in Steyr, Austria. Steyr Arms’s fundamental values have always remained, like our renowned cold-hammer-forged barrels, our four pillars of excellence—innovation, precision, reliability, and safety—continue to be at the company’s heart.

The first six AUG prototypes all had a removable optic option. It wasn’t until the 7th, and final, prototype that the decision was made to do the integrated optic. After that every StG 77 (the Austrian Military designation for the AUG) came with a Swarovski 1.5× optical sight permanently fixed. There was two reasons. First, and simply, was to double as a carry handle. The second reason was the demanding tests that the AUG had to pass. The AUG had to be able to be dropped from a height of 12 meters.

“The rifle was put in a metal box and then thrown down from 12 meters. And afterwards you must be able to still fire the rifle, so you need a very strong optic housing.” - Friedrich Aigner.

The history of Steyr Arms is rife with innovations in the fi****ms industry such as cold-hammer forging, the modern sniper rifle, and the first straight-pull rifle. Among those creations is the polymer magazine. The AUG incorporated the very first 30 round polymer magazine, and the reason for its development is almost as badass as the waffle mag itself:

“The magazines that were made from aluminum or from steel… the soldiers used it always as a bottle opener. And so it would destroy the magazine lips. And with a synthetic magazine, it is not possible to use as a bottle opener. It is also lighter and cheaper.” - Friedrich Aigner, one of the engineers of the AUG.

“In the 70’s when we would go to exhibitions, people would laugh at us for bringing a synthetic magazine. Then we would take the magazine out, and jump on the magazine on the floor, push the AUG barrel into it, even run it over with a car, and it would not be damaged.”

A common misconception is that the HBAR and the AUG LMG are the same weapon configuration. But the AUG LMG was an open-bolt platform with its own unique trigger pack and bolt carrier that was actually requested by and designed for the British. Open-bolt design is necessary for cooling the system, as the bolt remains open when the gun is charged, and only moves forward to strike the primer and extract the casing before returning to its wonderfully vented breezy position.

The development of the AUG was done in very close coordination with the Austrian military, and was required to meet all of their demands. However, when the rifle was complete, Austria was not the first to place an order. The first 10,000 AUG order was placed by Tunisia in 1977.

“What finally led to the order of 80,000 StG 77 (delivery of 10,000 StG 77 each year) for the Austrian Armed Forces. The first export order of 10,000 AUG, still before the order by the Austrian Armed Forces, was to Tunisia.” - Ing Horst Wesp

One of the signature design features of the AUG is the tailhook on the stock. The purpose was to be able to secure the stock into your shoulder when firing as a light support weapon (LSW) on a bipod. However, this concept was not new, and was pulled from the design of the man-portable light machine gun, the MG42.

“If you look at the stock of the MG42 there’s the same hook. This company was one of the most important weapon manufacturers in WW II. We produced 550,000 machine pistols, and also the MG42. When I was an apprentice, one of my teachers was a designer of the MG42. So you could say that the hook is coming directly from the Second World War, from that experience.” -Friedrich Aigner
