Fall Just Showed Up at Arce Gardens

There's a smell in the air this time of year. Nothing says it's here like a porch full of mums.

Ours arrived, and they're ready to go home with you today.

This Summer Is Testing Every Plant in Connecticut

We've been seeing the same thing over and over — plants that should be thriving are struggling.

**The #1 watering mistake we're seeing this summer: watering too shallow, too often.**

The fix is simple: water less frequently, but water deeply.

Give your plants a long, slow soak 1–2 times per week. Let the water reach 6–8 inches down. Then let the soil breathe before you water again. This trains roots to grow downward — where soil temperature is cooler and moisture holds longer.

Mistakes we're catching in CT gardens this summer:

- Watering in the afternoon heat (evaporation takes most of it before roots can use it)
- Wetting the leaves instead of the base (invites fungal disease in humid weather)
- Using the same schedule for every plant regardless of sun exposure or soil type
- Skipping mulch — which can cut your watering needs almost in half by holding moisture in

If your plants are struggling and you're not sure why, it may not be the watering at all. It could be the wrong plant for the spot, a drainage issue, or soil that needs amending.

How Often Is Too Often?

Here's a question we get almost every week at the garden center:

"How often should I be watering?"

Overwatering is the #1 reason healthy plants die in Connecticut gardens. It's not pests. It's not the soil. It's good intentions with a garden hose.

Here's the simple rule we tell every customer:

**Water the root zone, not the plant. And check the soil before you reach for the hose.**

Stick your finger two inches into the soil. If it's still moist, wait. If it's dry, water deeply and slowly — not a quick sprinkle. You want the water to reach the roots, not just wet the surface.

Most established perennials and shrubs in CT only need watering 1–2 times a week in summer, if that. New plantings are different — they need more consistent moisture for the first few weeks as they settle in.

The other mistake? Watering at the wrong time of day. Midday watering loses most of its moisture to evaporation before the roots can use it. Morning is best. Evening works, but wet foliage overnight can invite fungal issues.

A few more signs you may be overwatering:
- Yellowing leaves that aren't drought-stressed
- Soggy soil that never seems to dry out
- Wilting even though the soil is wet

Next time you reach for the hose, do the finger test first. Your plants will thank you.
