From seed to first harvest! 🌱🍉

One of our youngest DC Plant Week Photo Contest winners has been keeping us updated on the watermelon he grew, and we’ve loved following along.

At just 7 years old, he planted his own watermelon from seed! His dad entered his garden photo in our contest, and he was awarded 1st Place in our Kids & Community Garden category!

The variety he grew was Heirloom “Icebox” Watermelon ‘Doll Babies’, which he chose because he liked the illustration on the seed envelope.

Here’s what his father told us about his experience:
“It was totally his idea. He planted the seeds, tends them daily with a mandatory preschool status check, frets over whether they are showing the signs that the watermelons are ripe and ready to be picked, and just updated his classmates on the watermelon progress.”

And now, he’s officially made it from seed to harvest! We love seeing young gardeners get excited about growing their own food and taking pride in something they grew themselves.

Thank you to his dad for sharing these photos along with his story!

Thinking of planting some trees? You should be!

Don’t miss out on fall planting. Cooler temperatures and warm soil create great conditions for trees and shrubs to establish their roots before winter.

Ready to get started? Come see us and we’ll help you find the right selections for your unique space 💚🌳

Here are the Top 20 submissions from this year’s DC Plant Week Garden Photo Contest 🙌🌿

The competition was incredibly close, with several rounds of judging and plenty of beautiful gardens to consider.

Seeing the thought and care behind your plantings is one of our favorite parts of this contest.

Thank you to all who entered!
