Today was supposed to be our third-to-last day open. We came into the shop this morning expecting a normal 9-5 Saturday, with some potential minor disruptions. We had been made aware on Friday night that there would be some roof work happening, but we had no idea this would include any demolition work, rather we assumed this was a small repair at most.
The building’s owner had arranged for work to be done today, including the removal of sections of the existing roof and deteriorated material. During the work, pieces of roofing material, wood, dust and other debris came through into the shop and landed throughout the space, including on our inventory, displays and other shop property. There was enough material coming into the shop that we could not safely or reasonably open the doors to customers.
So, unfortunately, we did not open today.
We’re currently documenting everything that happened, working with our insurance company and figuring out what needs to happen next. We are also trying to determine exactly what materials were disturbed and what needs to be professionally assessed or cleaned before we can safely handle or sell affected inventory.
We also want to acknowledge that the conversation with the building owner today was difficult. When we expressed concerns about the debris, the condition of the shop, and the fact that we had been unable to open, we felt that those concerns were largely dismissed. We were told we were being too emotional. We don’t agree with that characterization, particularly given the amount of material that entered the shop and the uncertainty around what was disturbed.
For right now, we simply don’t have answers yet about what the rest of our final week will look like. We especially don’t know yet whether we’ll be able to have the final weekend we had planned. That’s a really hard thing to sit with when we were looking forward to spending these last few days with everyone who has supported us over the last three years.
We know some of you came by today and found the doors closed, and we’re really sorry. We were just as surprised as you were. We’ll keep you posted as we figure this out.
