I just had a crazy thought, I am getting ready to start guiding a couple students through complete builds and it made me think that maybe other people would like to follow along in a class type build along with me. It would be for serious builders who wanted to see how I did it and to have a conversation about why I do what I do. maybe it would be a couple hours a week via Zoom. I can’t talk about traditional vs. modern building without sharing my own take on it, so here is a sneak peek at **Stingray**.

This instrument is an absolute powerhouse! It has a Max R-rated top with Brazilian rosewood back, sides, and appointments, a 25.5" scale length, 1.75" nut, and 2.25" bridge spacing.

Stingray features a new finish for me, Rubio Monocoat. It is a hard wax oil finish that is gaining popularity, and I can see why. Despite having virtually no thickness, it seems to harden the wood underneath. I am calling this a “player finish” because it’s the first finish I’ve used that doesn’t scratch! Yes, I love a beautiful French polish, but it’s so fragile that you can almost be afraid to play it. Not with this finish. It is surprisingly durable and resilient while still feeling like wood. I won’t be switching entirely to this finish, but it is surely going to be my go-to for folks who want a guitar to play, not just collect.

The name Stingray has an interesting story that started about ten years ago on a trip to Mexico. Many tourist towns have leather shops filled with boots, wallets, belts, and other leather sundries, with just about every type of leather you could imagine somewhere inside. I love walking past these shops because there is something about the smell of leather that connects me to my Native ancestry. On this particular trip I wandered into one and started looking at all the amazing leatherwork. As craftsmen, we can recognize mastery of craft when we see it, and the leather workers of Mexico are certainly masters of theirs.

Amongst the ostrich and alligator leathers, there was one that stood out. I had no idea what animal it came from, but the color, pattern, and texture were incredible. Our trip went on, but I saved that material somewhere in my memory bank. I wasn’t sure why at the time, but I knew it was cool and that someday I needed to use it.

Many years later, I found myself musing about ways to expand the decorative palette of the guitar. There is only so much you can do with purfling, and Michi and Ray already did it anyway, so I started dreaming about other ways a guitar could be decorated. I wanted to add another dimension to the experience of the instrument. What if it wasn’t just an auditory and visual experience? What if there was a textural component as well? Then I remembered that leather shop.

Stingray leather is quite remarkable. It has these little spherical bumps that feel...interesting. There really isn’t another material quite like it. Traditionally, stingray skin was used as a grip material on samurai swords, and as some of you know, I have been adorning my guitars with Mokume Gane, another material with roots in Japanese sword making. The connection seemed natural, and stingray would be the perfect material for this experiment. Look closely at the decorations on this guitar and you can get a feeling for what the material is like. It is irregular and natural, while at the same time beautiful because of that irregularity. It adds something you don’t normally experience on a guitar. You don’t just see the appointments, you feel them.

I don’t think my guitars will ever be confused with traditional guitars, and that is on purpose. They are not traditional guitars in either look or sound. They aren’t meant to make you feel comfortable because they remind you of something you have seen before. I want them to elicit a response, a new feeling, curiosity, inspiration. I think that is part of what building instruments should be about. By pushing the art forward, we also push the artist.

To follow up on my last post, this really isn't about what a person does to achieve their sound. Whatever method a builder uses, and whether or not they can explain exactly what they're doing, doesn't really matter if the result is the guitar they intended to build.
In a sense, we are all modal tuning. We may use Chladni patterns, tap tones, measurements, intuition, or simply decades of experience, but we're all interacting with the same physical system.
To me, the movement toward measurement isn't about replacing those methods. It's about creating a common language so that, as a craft, we can begin to document and archive generational knowledge.
Does an experienced builder, trained in a traditional way and producing the results they want, need a new system of measurement to show them that what they're doing is "right"? Of course not.
Many of my friends who don't build empirically have chimed in on this discussion, and I think this is an important distinction. I might be able to measure what they are doing and explain why their process consistently arrives at a particular result, but the method they developed over decades has already told them that. The measurement may simply become a neat observation about something they already know.
I think of it like music theory applied to an amazing ear player. You can explain the harmony, identify the intervals, analyze the substitutions, and put names to everything the musician is doing. That's useful knowledge, particularly if you want to communicate it to someone else, but to the player it may amount to, "That's neat, but I already knew how to do that."
The measurement doesn't make the result more correct. It makes the result more describable.
That distinction matters.
I remember reading a passage in a classical guitar book describing a dinner attended by Antonio de Torres. At one point, a guest who was also a priest asked Torres the secret of his guitars. Torres' response, to paraphrase, was something like, "I'm sorry, Father, but it's in my fingers. I can't explain it to you."
That may have been true then. It doesn't have to be true now.
We have the knowledge and tools to begin putting names and numbers to what was once only a feeling in a builder's fingers. We can measure things that previous generations could only experience intuitively. That doesn't diminish their knowledge or accomplishments, and it certainly doesn't mean that a builder needs those measurements in order to build a great guitar. It gives us a way to describe, communicate, preserve, and build upon knowledge that might otherwise remain locked in an individual's experience.
Explaining the underlying nature of something has always generated resistance from tradition. There is an understandable discomfort in discovering that something we have understood one way for generations may actually work differently than we thought. History is full of that tension, but it has never stopped progress.
And there is an important irony in all of this. Being able to describe or measure what was once an esoteric feeling does not guarantee that you will build a great guitar.
Imagine that, Matrix-style, you could instantly download everything humanity knows about guitar making. Every relationship between mass, stiffness, damping, modes, materials, geometry, bracing, and acoustics. Every "secret" suddenly available to you.
You would still have to answer the most important question: What do I want the guitar to sound like?
Science can't answer that for you. Measurement can't give you taste. It can't give you an opinion. It can't decide what you value in an instrument or what compromises you're willing to make to achieve it.
That part remains the craft.
Ultimately, however you get there, understanding what you're doing and having an opinion about where you want to go are more important than any measurement. The measurement is simply a way of understanding how you got there, communicating it to others, and giving yourself, and perhaps the builders who come after you, a better idea of what to change the next time.

I saw a post suggesting that the newer generation of builders using scientific measurement and engineering principles are somehow less capable than builders who work more traditionally or intuitively.

It’s a common refrain, and one I’ve heard throughout nearly 30 years of building guitars. To me, it reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of what measurement is actually for.

The goal, in my opinion, should never be to avoid advancement simply because tradition has worked before. I personally find many aspects of traditional guitars lacking. That is my opinion, and my guitars are a reflection of it. Studying acoustics, materials, and engineering has given me insights into the instrument that I simply could not have gained through intuition alone.

You don’t have to believe in science for it to be true. Guitars aren’t exempt from physics.

My guitars are intentionally different from traditional guitars. They are not attempts to recreate what has already been done, nor am I trying to make a slightly more refined version of a traditional instrument.

I am trying to make a better guitar.

Of course, “better” is informed by my own priorities and opinions about what a guitar should do. I want greater responsiveness, more usable dynamic range, better balance, stronger projection, and greater control over how the instrument behaves. When something about traditional design works toward those goals, I keep it. When I believe something can be improved, I see no reason to preserve it simply because that is how guitars have historically been built.

Tradition is an incredibly valuable starting point. It represents generations of accumulated knowledge, experimentation, success, and failure. I have enormous respect for it.

But I don’t believe tradition has to be the finish line.

Every builder is entitled to their own philosophy. Their guitars are the sum of their experiences, preferences, intuition, and opinions. Mine are no different. The distinction is that I also inform those things with measurement.

The differences in my guitars aren’t accidents, and they aren’t the result of abandoning craftsmanship or intuition in favor of numbers. They are deliberate design decisions, informed by nearly 30 years at the bench and by what acoustics, engineering, and measurement have allowed me to understand.

My goal is intentionality.

I want each guitar to become the guitar I intended to build. At this point in my career, I don’t want to be surprised when I string one up. Surprise isn’t the goal. Repeatable control over the result is.

After nearly three decades of building, the only way I have found to consistently achieve that is to measure the things our hands, eyes, and ears cannot reliably quantify on their own.

And measurement has never replaced my intuition.

It has informed my intuition.

That distinction matters.

The more I have learned about how guitars actually behave, the better my instincts have become. Measurement gives me another sense—a way of seeing things that would otherwise remain invisible. I don’t see a downside to understanding more about the thing you’ve devoted your life to making.

I don’t measure things because I want to make guitars more scientific.

I measure things because I want to make better guitars.

Anyone can build however they choose—with tradition, intuition, measurement, engineering, or some combination of all of them.

I prefer the combination.

I prefer to build with my eyes open.
