Client Josh went on a rampage with a Truth Colored Double D

Josh came down from Georgia to experience the Chandeleur Islands and look for big trout. We accomplished that mission and built a good friendship as well. I knew when we talked on the phone the first couple calls that were going to get along just fine. He said he liked throwing a Double D and really liked his Waterloo rods. SAY LESS FAM. You are speaking my language. He proved his skills landed big fish after big fish along with tons of good eating size trout. I really look forward to having him on the boat again. Being a full time guide might be more work than you can ever imagine, but the plus sides of things definitely outweigh it. Meeting awesome people along the way is definitely way up there on the plus side of things.

Another Chandy summertime 5 pounder. This one came on a Heavy Dine (18mr) Mirrolure. There have been plenty of very healthy trout at the Chandeleur Islands this summer, but with that has also been plenty Bluefish and Ladyfish ready to destroy all your tackle. Although majority of our big fish have came on tails some days I just don’t feel like losing every bait I have on me. When throwing the 18mr in shallow conditions you need to work it fast to keep it off the bottom. With the lure moving faster I feel like you can get away with a heavier leader to avoid the toothy critters. It proved successful catching many trout along with this big one. When a bait is moving faster they don’t have as much time to study it.

Mayhem on the fly!

The past few days were absolutely epic for these fishy dudes. Davis comes every year and always shows out with his incredible skills on the fly rod catching everything that swims. Zach comes every year as well, but usually a chandy trip on conventional tackle where has landed a 7 pound trout and multiple over 5 with me. The cards fell just right for these two to share the boat and it was incredible. They landed close to 40 fish in 2 days on multiple species in all kinds of conditions on the fly. Mother nature has been dealing us a crazy hand lately. Windy one minute, cloudy the next, then rain, then sunshine, then who knows what’s next? I can promise you it didn’t come easy either. We had to cover some serious ground and dial in exactly what the fish wanted. They may have landed a ton, but we lost count of how many fish wouldn’t eat a thing. We eventually developed a pretty solid pattern and it all came together. I have tons of great footage from these trips and will but a video together soon. Good job fellas!

Life has been good!

I recently had the honor of hosting Jay Watkins, Sr. for a few days. They say “never meet your hero,” but that couldn’t be further from the truth with Jay. His passion and knowledge for the fishing industry is unmatched. He has taught me (and many others) invaluable lessons. To be able to show him around my backyard was an experience I won’t soon forget.

I’ve been fishing with Jay down in Texas for awhile now. He has told me many times he was going to come fish with me one day. Well, he is a man of his word. Unfortunately for me the conditions were pretty much the worst they could be for the Chandeleur Islands. Leading up to his trip we had multiple days of stiff west winds and extremely low tides. There is no protection from the wind out there when it comes from the west, and it blows lots of dirty water to the island. The extreme low tides (especially during the summer) really limit where the fish will be. I had a plan but also had to let Mother Nature dictate where we would fish when we got there. I passed up a few slicks in one area because it had been mostly smaller trout lately and kept going to one of my “west wind” spots. When we pulled up I knew things were going to come together but we would have to wait it out. There was 2ft rollers on the flats so we had to park the boat pretty deep to keep it from hitting bottom in the waves. I have a pretty funny video of Jay swimming to the sandbar that I may or may not post later, haha. Once we got in place we both knew the spot had potential. The water clarity was good and there was a stupid amount of bait pouring in. We got to work. The morning started out pretty slow but we both knew better than to leave. On top of all this the trout were pretty dang picky. We communicated and finally go the bite dialed in. That was their ass. We went to town on a super solid bite. It didn’t take Jay long to really start honing on the bigger fish in the area. He popped a few studs including the one pictured. Standing next to him in one of my favorite places on earth catching trout every cast was pretty unforgettable. More to come! Thanks Jay!!!

We’re excited to announce the launch of a Gulf-wide Cobia & Tripletail High Dollar Reward Tagging Program, made possible through funding from the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission and the collaboration of researchers and partners from across the Gulf Coast.

Over the coming months, hundreds of cobia and Tripletail will be tagged to help us better understand their movements, habitat use, survival and connectivity throughout the Gulf. Every angler who reports a tagged fish contributes directly to the success of this research.

Anglers who return a tag will receive a $250 reward! 💵

✅ If the fish is harvested, please return the acoustic tag as well
