We’ve seen the many comments and conversations surrounding our move, and we understand that people have very different feelings about it. Some are excited for our next chapter, while others are genuinely sad or disappointed to see us leave Bixby. We completely understand, and we’d like to clear up some of the misinformation surrounding our decision.
We love Bixby. We love this community, our customers, our vendors, and the relationships we’ve built here. If staying in Bixby had been a realistic option, we would have chosen it. We even tried to move next door, but unfortunately Ace Hardware beat us to it by mere minutes. The reality is that there simply aren’t many locations in Bixby large enough to accommodate our business.
Our current location has also become increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain. We hear concerns about the building from customers and vendors every day, and we’ve experienced many of those issues ourselves. Our landlord has also shared that future plans for the area do not include our building, which is why he is only willing to offer short-term leases with a 5% annual increase.
The parking situation is another issue that unfortunately has no realistic solution at our current location. Our parking lot is simply too small for the size of our business, and we will always be limited by that space. Along with the condition of the building, major issues like the roof and aging AC systems aren't going to be addressed. On top of that, our electric bill alone runs $2,500–$5,000 a month, with repairs adding another $1,000–$4,000 monthly.
We aren’t leaving Bixby because we want to. We’re leaving because staying was no longer a sustainable or secure option for our business.
We hope this helps provide some context behind what has been an incredibly difficult decision. We are excited for what comes next, but we will always be grateful for the years we’ve spent in Bixby and everyone who has supported Red Beard’s Treasure Chest. ❤️
If you have genuine questions about the move, we’re happy to answer them.
