On this Saturday, June 6th from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM we will be joined by Nancy Werking Poling author of “Leander’s Lies.”

“Leander’s Lies” is a historical fiction novel set in post-Civil War North Carolina, about a poor but ambitious farmer that feels trapped by his life and held back from his dreams of becoming a proper gentleman. And then he hunted with Teddy Roosevelt and became a US Congressman from North Carolina.
But he didn’t. Inspired by Poling’s husband’s ancestor—who even lied to his own family, Poling creates a detailed and alluring story weaving together the complexity of life and the impact of our choices.

We are so very excited to host Nancy Werking Poling and we are so excited for you to come a grab a copy of “Leander’s Lies.” We’ll see you there!

We’ve got a huge (and amazing!!) event coming up! This Friday, May 29th, we will be joined by 8 authors!

Each of these authors are coming from the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference! They span genres—from children’s books to fantasy to nonfiction—and everything you can imagine in between!

From 1:30 until 3:00 the first group of four authors: Cathy Baker, Heather Kreke, Beth Fortune, and Deena Adams will join us!

Then from 3:30 to 5:00 four more authors: A.C. Williams, Tammy Parlow, Bettie Boswell, and Michelle Medlock Adams will be here!

This is such an amazing opportunity for us to showcase these authors and their many beautiful books! We hope you’ll come down and support these wonderful ladies!

Come to Sassafras this coming Saturday, May 16th to meet poets Hillary Gonzalez and Clint Bowman from 12:00 - 2:30 PM.

Hillary Gonzalez’s work explores themes of ecopoetry, identity, and healing. They are the author of “Seasons” (a well-loved collection in Sassafras), the newly released “Wild, Unfelt World,” and the upcoming “Where the Osprey Nest.” Hillary is also an activist and is a founding board member of the Baltimore City nonprofit, Sacred Parks & Waterways. It will truly be such a treat to have Hillary join us— you won’t want to miss them and their beautiful work!

Clint Bowman is a regular friend here in Black Mountain (and at Sassafras!). His most recent collection “If Lost” is another one of our favorites. Dealing with modern Appalachian life—from the beauty of nature to the people and the connection and struggle between the two. Clint is also the founder of Dark City Poets Society that holds free open-mic poetry nights in town every month. He’s basically Black Mountain famous so you won’t want to miss him here!

We are really so excited to have these two wonderful poets join us this weekend! Make sure you come down to check out their work and support them!
