“One of my favorite herbs for dry, irritated, rashy skin conditions. Taken internally (as a tincture), Red Alder helps the liver to do its job and direct toxins out through the bile,” helping to soothe said skin conditions.

Introducing Jen, one of our friendly and diligent summer interns! During her time at PSB, she has been learning all about what we do here - lab work, GMP protocol, shipping department processes, and more. The following is a mini interview with Jen:

🍃What started your interest in herbalism?
I was always interested in herbs and plants, but when my daughter was always bruising it was suggested to try Calendula. We have used that for 23 years for all of her skin conditions.

🍃Do you have a current favorite herb, and why?
My current favorite is Acorus calamus. It is the herb for my monograph in herbal class, so I am delving deeply into the water cleansing properties.

🍃What do you hope to do with your herbal education?
I am using my herbalism practice in conjunction with my healing business and Vedic astrology practice.

🍃Any personal thoughts on herbalism? One thing I really love about plants and herbalism is the awareness that there is an entire culture of plant world surrounding our lives that we could just put our eyes to in order to interact with.

Thank you, Jen, for interning with us! We appreciate all that you bring to this herbal community.🌿

Tinctures and Glycerites

Most everyone is familiar with vanilla extract for baking. It’s essentially a tincture. Tinctures are alcohol-based liquid extracts of plants.

The plants, whether fresh or dried, are blended up to soak or steep in alcohol for about 2 weeks and the alcohol extracts, or releases, different properties from the plants. When ready, we press off the liquid and discard the solids, and the remaining liquid is the tincture.

A glycerite, is an alcohol-free version of the same thing. Glycerites are used for children, pregnancy, and those who have alcohol-sensitivities or picky taste buds. They have a thicker, sticky viscosity but are also a little more gentle for the body and don’t have the “bite” from the alcohol, great for those who have sensitive constitutions and need to take things slow. Vegetable-based glycerine is a naturally sweet extract that many people prefer when taking herbs.

PSB offers a variety of both tinctures and glycerites in over 200 different herbs! Check them out on our website, stop in for a visit, or give us a call…We are here for you!

See our blog “How We Make Tinctures” for additional information.

Image shows jars of fresh Elderflower as tincture and as glycerite.
