NEBRASKA CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION

LINCOLN, NE, November 25, 2013 -- For the week ending November 24, 2013, dry conditions the first half of the week allowed producers access to remaining unharvested corn and sorghum fields, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Precipitation, mainly in the form of snow, arrived the last half of the week and was limited in eastern areas but heavier in western counties. While pockets of extreme drought exist in western counties, statewide, soil moisture supplies going into the winter months are above year ago levels. Statewide, producers had 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 5 percent very short, 20 short, 75 adequate, and 0 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 12 percent very short, 31 short, 57 adequate, and 0 surplus.

This is the last weekly Crop Progress and Condition report for the 2013 growing season. We would like to extend our appreciation to the dedicated county FSA and extension staff who supplied the necessary information for these reports. For December through March, we will issue monthly reports. The first monthly report (December) will be issued December 30. Weekly reports will begin April 7th for the 2014 season.

Field Crops Report: Corn harvested was 96 percent, behind 100 last year but ahead of 90 average.

Sorghum harvest was 99 percent complete, behind 100 last year but ahead of 90 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 25 fair, 63 good, and 8 excellent, well above year ago levels.

Proso millet was 95 percent harvested, behind 100 last year and 100 average.

NEBRASKA CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION

LINCOLN, NE, November 18, 2013 -- For the week ending November 17, 2013, dry conditions and above normal temperatures across much of the state allowed fall harvest to move toward completion, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Grain moisture levels are still high in remaining northeastern fields, slowing final wrap up. Producer attention is now turning to fall tillage and fertilizer applications. Cattle continue to utilize stalks and weaned calves were being moved to lots or market. Statewide, producers had 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 5 percent very short, 19 short, 75 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 14 percent very short, 31 short, 55 adequate, and 0 surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn harvested was 91 percent, behind 100 last year but ahead of 83 average.

Sorghum harvest was 97 percent complete, behind 100 last year but ahead of 82 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 25 fair, 63 good, and 9 excellent, well above year ago levels.

Proso millet was 94 percent harvested, behind 100 last year and 100 average.

NEBRASKA CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION

LINCOLN, NE, November 12, 2013 -- For the week ending November 10, 2013, snow in western counties and rain in the east limited harvest progress during the first half of the week, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Grain moisture continued to remain above safe storage levels in a number of counties which also slowed the move to harvest completion. Most of the remaining unharvested corn acres were in the northern districts. Statewide, producers had 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 5 percent very short, 19 short, 75 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 13 percent very short, 33 short, 54 adequate, and 0 surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn harvested was 81 percent, well behind 100 last year but ahead of 76 average.

Sorghum harvest was 91 percent complete, behind 98 last year but well ahead of 73 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 27 fair, 60 good, and 8 excellent, well above year ago levels.

Proso millet was 93 percent harvested, behind 100 last year but near 95 average.

NEBRASKA CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION

LINCOLN, NE, October 28,2013 -- For the week ending October 27, 2013, dry weather throughout the state was welcomed by corn and soybean producers who were busy harvesting their crops. Cooler than average temperatures however, slowed crop dry-down in some areas. Ranchers were moving cattle to winter feeding areas and weaning calves. Statewide, producers had 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 8 percent very short, 27 short, 64 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 18 percent very short, 37 short, 45 adequate, and 0 surplus.

Field Crops Report: All corn condition rated 7 percent very poor, 6 poor, 19 fair, 48 good, and 20 excellent. Irrigated corn conditions rated 81 percent good or excellent. Dryland corn conditions rated 49 percent good or excellent. Corn mature was 97 percent, behind 100 last year but near 95 average. Corn harvested was 55 percent, well behind 93 last year and equal to 55 average.

Soybeans harvest was 94 percent complete, behind 98 last year but ahead of 88 average.

Sorghum conditions rated 16 percent very poor, 18 poor, 26 fair, 37 good, and 3 excellent. Sorghum harvest was 64 percent complete, well behind 82 last year but ahead of 45 average.

Winter wheat rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 24 fair, 64 good, and 8 excellent. Winter wheat emerged was 94 percent, well ahead of 72 last year and 88 average.

Proso millet was 88 percent harvested, behind 97 last year and 91 average.

Ninety-seven percent of dry beans were harvested, ahead of 93 last year and equal to 97 average.

The fourth cutting of alfalfa was 91 percent complete, behind 100 last year and 99 average.

NEBRASKA CROP PROGRESS AND CONDITION

LINCOLN, NE, October 21,2013 -- For the week ending October 20, 2013, an inch or more of precipitation early in the week covered much of the eastern two-thirds of the state, slowing harvest progress, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Most soybean acres were harvested with producer’s attention now moving to corn. Below normal temperatures and wet conditions combined to slow drydown of corn acres. Livestock producers were moving cattle to harvested corn fields as they became available. Statewide, producers had 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 6 percent very short, 23 short, 69 adequate, and 2 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 18 percent very short, 37 short, 45 adequate, and 0 surplus.

Field Crops Report: All corn condition rated 7 percent very poor, 7 poor, 18 fair, 47 good, and 21 excellent. Irrigated corn conditions rated 84 percent good or excellent. Dryland corn conditions rated 46 percent good or excellent. Corn mature was 92 percent, behind 100 last year but equal to 92 average. Corn harvested was
32 percent, well behind 88 last year and 44 average.

Soybean conditions rated 3 percent very poor, 7 poor, 21 fair, 52 good, and 17 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves were 99 percent, near 100 last year and 100 average. Harvest was 80 percent complete, behind 94 last year but near 81 average.

Sorghum conditions rated 19 percent very poor, 21 poor, 25 fair, 33 good, and 2 excellent. Sorghum mature was
98 percent, near 97 last year but ahead of 85 average. Harvest was 32 complete, behind 60 last year but near
30 average.

Winter wheat rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 25 fair, 68 good, and 4 excellent. Wheat was 96 percent seeded, near 97 last year and 97 average. Wheat emerged was 73 percent, ahead of 56 last year but behind 80 average.

Proso millet was 86 percent harvested, behind 93 last year but equal to 86 average.

Ninety-four percent of dry beans were harvested, ahead of 90 last year but near 96 average.

The fourth cutting of alfalfa was 89 percent complete, behind 100 last year but behind 96 average.
