Have you ever wondered how an ear of corn develops?

It really is a fascinating process that requires some pretty incredible timing, and it all begins with pollination.

When the time is right, the tassel at the top of the corn plant releases its pollen, and wind and gravity carry those grains throughout the cornfield, hopefully to the waiting silks on the young ears of corn.

When a pollen grain lands on a silk, it begins traveling down that silk strand toward the corn cob. If the pollination process is successful, the kernel connected to that silk will begin developing, which is why every strand of silk matters. If a single silk doesn't receive pollen, the kernel connected to it will not develop, and there will be missing kernels on the cob.

So those little strands of silk you see during the growing season are actually playing a big role in determining what the finished ear will look like!

Congratulations to Blissfield High School senior Brayden Cunningham and sophomore Grace Nieman, who each successfully completed the ZFS Riga Punt, Pass & Kick Challenge at Friday night's football game against Ida.
Both Brayden and Grace moved the ball almost 80 yards down the field with a punt and a pass, then completed the challenge by kicking field goals through the uprights in the north end zone of the stadium, each on their first try.
For their efforts, they earned a $100 gift card, and the right to choose a school organization to receive a $500 donation from ZFS Riga.
Brayden selected the Blissfield High School soccer program as his recipient, while Grace elected to to earmark her donation for the Blissfield softball program.
ZFS Riga would like to thank Brayden and Grace for such a great effort on Friday, and thank you to all the students who entered the contest to participate, and thank you to Blissfield High School and its athletic department for the wonderful support.
We can't wait to do it again next year.

Who wants $50?

It’s time to start thinking about the 2027 ZFS Riga calendar! Once again, the theme is “general agriculture”. If your photo gets picked, you’ll score $50 and major bragging rights!

What kind of photos are we looking for?
- Farm scenes
- Farm equipment
- Farm animals
- Anything that depicts life on the farm or is related to farming and agriculture.

Please note that the images must be high resolution – so if you are using your phone, set it on the largest file setting or highest quality setting. The photos also need to be landscape/horizontal to fit our calendar format.

Deadline is October 16.

Happy Labor Day from ZFS Riga!!!

Today, we are celebrating our wonderful employees and honoring the dedicated farmers who work with us throughout the year. Thank you all so much for your hard work and commitment — we truly appreciate everything you do!

Zeeland Farm Services wants to remind everyone that some area schools are already back in session for the year, and many others are soon to follow. That means school busses are back on the road, and excited students are out there every morning waiting for their rides to school, or are anxious to get home at the end of a long day. Please be extra cautious and obey all traffic rules and the bus warning lights, as many young students are doing this for the first time, while others are getting back into the bus-riding routine. It only takes a few extra seconds to do the right thing.

Also, it won’t be long until fall harvest season is here, and that means the school busses will be joined on the road by tractors, combines, trucks and other slow-moving farm equipment. These folks are trying to move from farm-to-field, or field-to-farm as quickly as possible, and they don’t like being on the road any more than you like them being there.
So please give our farmers a little grace, and be cautious as you pass, knowing that the larger vehicles are not that nimble, and moving off to the side isn’t always an option.
Remember, road safety is a two-way street.

We had an amazing time at the Blissfield River Raisin Festival this past weekend! We're grateful to be part of a community that values coming together and celebrating local traditions. A big thank you to Zeeland Freight Services driver Chad Bartlett for proudly driving the ZFS truck in the parade Saturday morning.
