Groth Music Company

Groth Music Company Serving music educators, students and performers since 1939. Groth Music was founded in 1939 by Chester E.

Groth, a professional musician, who sought to bring a quality music store to Twin Cities musicians. Once established, Groth Music earned a reputation of integrity, a place where one could find a knowledgeable sales staff, and quality merchandise at fair prices. Groth Music remained at its downtown location for nearly 50 years until the boom of skyscrapers in Minneapolis forced the last vestige of

the old fashioned music store out of Minneapolis. Chester Groth died in 1985 and ownership was assumed by his daughter. Nancy Groth Kersten expanded inventory to include music, ethnic instruments from around the world, and gift items not normally found in the Twin Cities. Groth Music is still an old fashioned family music store with an emphasis on quality products, integrity, and satisfied customers. Groth Music developed a web presence in 1999 and continues to bring more of it's more popular items online today. In 2005 the company began publishing a Music Education Catalog which is now distributed nationwide and includes 164 pages packed full of some of the most popular items used in schools and churches around the country and even overseas.

It's the end of an era as the Pepsi machine makes its final exit from the break room. The good news is that it will live on with new owners who plan to repair it. Amazingly, it fit in the back of a Hyundai Santa Fe. The last photo in this sequence shows the machine in its natural habitat c. 2005.

Few names in pedagogical piano composition are as familiar as Catherine Rollin. She was the featured presenter at this year's Minnesota Music Teachers Association convention, and we were delighted to partner with her and her longtime publisher Alfred Music to make her pieces available for purchase in the exhibit hall. Pictured are Catherine, Darin, and two boxes full of her publications!

Since the pandemic, Catherine has self-published four new volumes in her "Museum Masterpieces" series, adding to the six volumes already published by Alfred Music. Each piece in the series was inspired by a great work of art, and full-color reproductions of the featured paintings are included in each book, along with historical notes about the artwork. Two of her recent collections focus on paintings by female artists, while the newest volume highlights works depicting music and dance.

Over the course of her career, Catherine has published more than 400 compositions, inspiring generations of piano students and teachers.

🔙 April, 2005 feature in MMR Magazine:

"...despite all the challenges and proving their staying power, karaoke dealers such as Todd Johnson who heads up the karaoke department at Groth Music in Bloomington, Minn., seem to be holding their own and thriving in a business that caters to a favorite pastime of people of all ages.

MMR: Are your hardware rentals successful?

T.J.: I carry four rental units and on any given weekend they are all rented out. We put together a unit, which includes the 250-watt Vocopro twister, two microphones, a five-inch LCD display, and 900 songs on 60 discs. Our rentals are based on a 24-hour time slot from noon to noon.

MMR: What percentage of your total sales is karaoke?

T.J.: Karaoke holds pretty steady throughout the year for us, and our total sales from it would be about five to ten percent.

MMR: How many different karaoke products do you stock?

T.J.: In the CDGs we carry just about every major brand, and I would say we have easily 5,000 karaoke CDs. In players I tend to pick and choose which ones are the most reliable, so I only carry about five or six."

From Charlie Eble's retirement in 1989 until Groth Music's acquisition of Eble Music Company in 2014, the iconic sheet music store was owned and run by David Hempel and his wife Jane Walker. Besides putting in "60 hours a week at his business," David played principal oboe in The Cedar Rapids Symphony (now Orchestra Iowa), while Jane served (and continues to serve!) as principal flute. It is no coincidence that Eble became especially well known for woodwind music during that period.

This profile from the Cedar Rapids Gazette entitled "Job jugglers: Moonlighters driven by necessity and passion" touches on David's deep love of music and the sacrifices he made for his art. "My accountant says I would be better off to give up the symphony and put in more hours here as we prepare our internet website. He is sure that my time and effort would be better spent working on the business."

⚠️🚜Road Contruction Update: It's brutal!

The best way to reach our store right now is from the south via 82nd Street and then Nicollet Ave. The closest exits from 494 are Lyndale and Portland, but Nicollet is closed at American Boulevard.

Access to Nicollet from American will be restored at the end of June. The Nicollet bidge over 494 is scheduled to be done in September. The ramps between Nicollet and 494 are permanently closed.

In the mean time, we apologize for the mess and appreciate your persistence in coming to see us!
