Reverend Johnnie Simmons grew up in the historic Gullah community of Frogmore on St. Helena Island. A Vietnam veteran, minister, and self-taught artist, Simmons began creating art after attending a PTSD treatment program in 2003. His distinctive style combines wood burning and acrylic paint to capture the traditions, memories, and everyday life of the Gullah people.

In “Hopscotch,” Simmons transforms a simple childhood game into a window into Lowcountry life. Like much of his work, the piece reflects the stories, experiences, and cultural traditions that have shaped generations throughout the Sea Islands.
