ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | BETTY HINTZ

Betty Thorpe Hintz brought a lifetime of travel and experience to the Bluffton art community.

Before settling in Bluffton in the mid-1980s, Betty spent decades living abroad in Indonesia, the Philippines, South Africa, Singapore and Bermuda. Those experiences would later influence much of her artwork.
After making Bluffton home, Betty became deeply involved in the local arts community and was one of the seven founding members of the Society of Bluffton Artists in 1994.

She continued developing her work, including studying pastel with fellow Bluffton artist Joyce Nagel.

Working in a variety of media, Betty often drew inspiration from the colors, people and places she encountered during her years overseas.

Her 2014 exhibition, East of Suez, featured works inspired largely by Southeast Asia and Bali.

Betty’s work will be featured in Collected in Bluffton, September 25 and 26 at Four Corners Gallery.

All artwork in this special private collection will be available for purchase during the event.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | JOYCE NAGEL

Joyce Nagel brings a strong foundation in design, drawing, and printmaking to her work, along with a deep appreciation for the landscape.

An accomplished pastel and oil painter, Joyce is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America and a Member of Excellence with the Southeastern Pastel Society. Her work has received numerous awards in regional and national exhibitions, and she has shared her techniques through workshops in the United States and abroad.

Her thoughtful compositions, layered color, and expressive approach to the landscape give her work a distinctive sense of depth and atmosphere.

We’re pleased to feature Joyce Nagel as part of Collected in Bluffton, September 25–26 at Four Corners Fine Art & Framing.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | JON NELSON & PEGGY DUNCAN

Jon Nelson and Peggy Duncan were an important part of the foundation of Bluffton’s early art community.

Peggy opened A Little Local Color in 1985, Bluffton’s first framing business, which later became Crossroads Fine Art and Framing. Together, Peggy and Jon became part of the growing community of artists helping establish Bluffton as an arts destination.

Both were founding members of the Society of Bluffton Artists in 1994 and later joined Lynda Potter and Bill Mattox in forming the Guild of Bluffton Artists, the cooperative that would eventually become Pluff Mudd Art.

Their work reflected the Lowcountry they called home, and their influence can still be felt in Bluffton’s art community today.

Works by Jon Nelson and Peggy Duncan will be featured in Collected in Bluffton, September 25 and 26 at Four Corners Art Gallery. This special collection of original artwork from the private collection of Lynda Potter and her husband will be available for purchase during the event.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | BILL MATTOX

Bill Mattox helped lay the foundation for Bluffton’s thriving arts community. In 1994, he was one of seven local artists who founded the Society of Bluffton Artists and later joined Lynda Potter, Peggy Duncan and Jon Nelson in establishing another cooperative gallery in Bluffton.

Working primarily in pastel, Bill created works that remain treasured by collectors throughout the Lowcountry.

This piece by Bill is part of Collected in Bluffton, a special private collection featuring works gathered over many years by Lynda Potter and her husband.

Lynda Potter played an important role in shaping Bluffton’s arts community. As a founding member and the first president of the Society of Bluffton Artists, she was an artist, teacher and mentor who encouraged creativity in others while creating an impressive body of work of her own.

Known for her loose, atmospheric paintings and lush florals, Lynda found inspiration in the architecture and beauty of Bluffton and Savannah.

This September, Four Corners is honored to share a special collection of Lynda’s work during Collected in Bluffton, along with works by other artists who helped shape Bluffton’s creative community.
