People are suffering. Here are some Fair Trade channels through which to help.
Greetings, fair trade friends! We want to share a little update about of fair trade partners. While there are thankfully no reports of casualties among the artisans and farmers we are honored to work with after recent environmental disasters in Nepal, Colombia, and KCK, all are tragically impacted. Many of you have asked how you can help. Below are a few avenues that you can explore. This is our way of going beyond retailing their beautifully handcrafted products and telling their stories in our artisan collective:
Kansas City Kansas
Right here at home, the farmers of New Roots for Refugees are estimating a 90% crop loss after the extreme weather event in Kansas City, Kansas, two weeks ago. For those who have purchased a CSA, please note that they will not be at Crafted this Thursday, September 3rd to distribute CSA shares and are evaluating what the near future holds. Please consider planning to invest in a 2027 CSA Share or donate to New Roots parent organization Cultivate KC.
Nepal:
Ganesh Himal Trading Conscious Connections Foundation- CCF helped to form a non-profit in Nepal after the 2015 earthquake. Currently, they are on the ground working after the flooding. You can learn more and donate directly at https://www.consciousconnectionsfoundation.org/
Colombia:
Karen Torres, founder of Tulia’s Artisan Gallery, shared with us that the indigenous Wounaan artisans who create their TAVWE Collection of woven earrings and bracelets were hit very hard by the earthquake in Colombia. Approximately 50-75% of their humble homes and schools have been destroyed. Additionally, over 40 hospitals across Colombia have collapsed, including the one serving this community. She shared two ways to support the Wounaan. One option is to purchase any item from the TAVWE Jewelry Collection at www.tulias.com, and 50% of the purchase price will be donated to the Maach Den Foundation, the foundation created to support the Wounaan. Another option is to make a monetary donation through their community partner, Chicago Fair Trade, at chicagofairtrade.org/donate/ and simply type COLOMBIA in the comment box of their donation page. All donations will be given to Maach Den Foundation. Follow Tulia’s on Instagram, , for more details and their latest updates.
We will continue to share details as they become available. Feel free to visit us in store in Downtown Overland Park to support artisans and farmers around the world.
