🍂 Hello, Autumn! And for Blue Jays, that means caching season! 💙

If it seems like Blue Jays are suddenly emptying your feeders at record speed, there’s a reason. This time of year, they’re not necessarily eating all those sunflower seeds and peanuts... they’re stashing them for later!

Here’s an amazing fun fact: In one study, a Blue Jay was observed packing more than 100 sunflower seeds into its crop during a single visit to a feeder! 😲

Autumn is a beautiful time of year... to give your nest boxes a good cleaning.🍂🐦

We recommend cleaning nest boxes twice a year: in early spring before nesting season and again in the fall. After raising their families, birds may continue to use nest boxes as shelter during fall and winter, especially at night or during cold, wet weather. This behavior is called roosting. A good fall cleaning also helps reduce the chance of mites overwintering in the box.

🧤 To clean your nest box:
• Take it down and, wearing gloves, remove all old nesting material and scrape away any droppings.
• Dispose of the debris in a plastic bag.
• Scrub the box with a solution of 1 part chlorine bleach to 10 parts hot water.
• Rinse thoroughly with hot water.
• Let the box dry completely in the sun before putting it back up.

Clean, dry and ready for its next feathered guest! 🐦🏠

As crab apples ripen, they become an important fall food source for birds. Robins, waxwings, bluebirds, cardinals and grosbeaks are among the birds that may stop by for this tart and fruity, energy-packed snack.
