START BRUSHING!!- Brushing is the best way to get the downy spinnable undercoat. Cut ends on a f
iber show in finished work, and don't 'adhere' as well as naturally-shed/brushed fur. AMOUNT OF FUR NEEDED- This will vary greatly depending on yarn type and desired outcome/item, breed, 'all-dog' or blended with other fibers, etc.
***What I Know- For example- Approximately 2 oz. of Husky Mix fur, created about 120 yards of 2-ply worsted-weight yarn, which is generally enough yardage for a knitted beanie. BREEDS: Breeds native to the colder environs make the best yarns, as their undercoats are generally long, downy, and the fibers have 'great grip'. HUSKY, WOLF, SHEPARDS, ST. BERNARD, NEWFOUNDLAND, SAMOYED, CHOWCHOW-and More!
**But Really, fur from most shedding breeds can be worked with.
-Refer to photos of yarn from Andy, the Corgi-mix whose fiber staple length was 1''-1.5'', and pretty slick, which are not ideal qualities in spinning fiber, BUT this just means possibly having to spin a thicker yarn. COST- To Be Discussed
