“Here is a look down the south side of Main street looking east from almost 9th street. This is somewhere between the years 1890 and 1894. The large building on the right is the “Capital Hotel”, built in 1889. Whitehead Drugs was one of the first stores to move in as they were putting the finishing touches on the building in November of 1889. The Capitol Hotel took over the building above street level in 1890. One of the buildings that were lost to this urban renewal was the Mt. Hood Saloon that opened in 1864.

Looking down the street at The Idaho Saddlery Co., Whitehead Drugs, Weller & Kohny Clothiers, Adolph Ballot Jewelers, and on the corner is the First National Bank of Idaho, in the old Post & Bilderback building.

Across 8th street is Frank Coffin & Bro. Hardware. In 1894 He threw a party for all the old Boise pioneers that were still kicking, then demolished the store in this photo, and had the “Pioneer Building” constructed on the same spot.

It is interesting that the buildings that replaced the buildings in the photo have also been replaced.

In 1902 the bank had the old Post & Bilderback building replaced with a new large building.

The Capital Hotel was semi demolished in 1934 when it was reduced to just single story.

The Pioneer building was demolished in 1971.

The first Nat’l Bank of Idaho building demolished in 1972.”
