I see The Tepee !! 😀
Since today is not a nice day, I figured I would post a photo of sunnier times, this time over the beautiful little town of Bolton Landing!
Did you know that the town was supposed to be a little further south?
But thanks to an ornery hotel owner and the steamships the town developed further north!
Opening around 1800, the Mohican House was Bolton's first tavern and hotel. It was located where the Bixby Estate is now and located near, what is now known as, Mohican Point (which was later named after this hotel).
A landing was built on the end of the point for the steamboats to visit and people would walk over the grounds of the hotel to get to the main town. The owner of the Mohican House didnt like this, so he demanded another landing be built further north.
But this didnt do him well because when the landing moved north, the steamboats and their passengers moved north and the shops were not far behind them!
This is because these shops wanted to be first ones that disembarking passengers would see and hopefully spend their money at them, because just like with the first few links in a Google search, most of the folks would spend their money and time with the first few shops that they would see!
So the town would eventually center itself around the landing, thus creating the separate village of Bolton.
Well this didnt work out as well for the Mohican House as the owner hoped.
By the 1890s other hotels had been built that were both larger and grander and closer to the landing and the Mohican House had fallen on hard times and by 1899 the hotel had closed.
Be careful what you wish for folks!
