Pineapple sage (Salvia elegans)
Who doesn’t love the pineapple-y scent of this perennial in the garden? I use the flowers for tea, but you know who else loves these flowers? Migrating hummingbirds! Aside from our Sochi tea, this is the last flower in our gardens to bloom. Its lipstick-shaped flowers provide extra energy to our friends, the birds. You need this!

I sell a lot of lavender every year, and one of the questions I frequently get asked is how to maintain it (or any woody perennial herb, really) when they start to look rough. I have the same issue, of course, and here’s how I handle that. 5 weeks ago, I checked the base of my bedraggled lavender to find the new growth, and I cut it back to that point. All of it at once. I know it seems dangerous, but I’ve never lost one to a cut-back. Here is that same lavender, 5 weeks later, flush with healthy new growth. I know this one is 5 or 6 years old already, and I figure it’s got another 5 left in it. Lavender dreams, friends!
