🇮🇪 The Story Behind the Irish Flag 🇮🇪

The Irish Tricolour — green, white, and orange — is one of the most powerful symbols of Ireland’s identity and unity. It was first introduced in 1848 by Thomas Francis Meagher, a leader of the Young Ireland movement. Inspired by the French Revolution’s ideals of liberty and equality, Meagher presented the flag as a vision of peace and hope for a divided nation.

The green represents the Gaelic tradition of Ireland and the Irish Catholic community, while the orange stands for the followers of William of Orange, symbolising the Protestant community. The white in the centre signifies the aspiration for lasting peace and unity between both traditions — a shared Ireland where all people could live side by side in mutual respect.

Although the tricolour was first flown in 1848, it didn’t become widely recognised until the Easter Rising of 1916, when it was raised above the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin by Irish rebels proclaiming the Republic. From that moment, it became forever linked to the struggle for Irish independence.

Today, the Irish flag stands proudly as a symbol of peace, equality, and unity — values that continue to guide the Republic of Ireland. When it flies high, especially above historic places like the GPO, it reminds us of our past struggles, our shared heritage, and the hope for harmony among all who call Ireland home. ☘️
