It was expensive. It was brand new. We still said no.

The hardest part of this job is telling someone their nicest piece isn’t the one that sells. Price and condition are only two of the inputs. Demand is the third, and it’s the one nobody expects.

What we took today: Reformation, Miista boots, a few fall pieces. What we gave back: anything summer, anything 2010, and one very expensive dress that just sits.

How a consignment price actually gets set, in sixty seconds.

Condition first. Box and papers, or not. Authentication. Then the part most people skip: what is this piece actually selling for right now, not what it retailed for, and not what one optimistic listing says.

This Gucci came back between $600 and $800 across real listings. A couple of outliers over a thousand, which we ignore. Perfect condition pushes it to the top of the range.

Final: $800. The owner had asked for $500.

We offered strangers $5 to guess what a Chanel 22 resells for. Nobody would play.

So we raised it to $20. Still nothing.

The guesses we did get: $620. $2,075. $4,600. One person got close enough that it hurt.

Nobody won. So the money rolls over to next week, and we’re doing it again.

One of these Chanel jackets is from 2024. The other is from 1995.
They’re hanging on the same rack.
