She walked in, picked the colour she wanted, and walked out wearing it.

No waitlist. No spending history. No being offered a green one when you asked for grey.

She has another Birkin at home she’s been thinking about selling. We asked whether this changed that. “I can still sell that one. This one I’m carrying right now.”

Then she found out it comes with its own rain cover, asked if we ship to San Diego, and talked us into throwing in a bracelet.

“For that price, come on. You got a great price.”She’s right.

Eleven Chanel pieces landed this week and four of them are older than most of our customers.

The buttons on the vintage pieces are the giveaway. They say Chanel on them and they’re better made than most jewellery.

Best opening line we’ve had at this counter.

She brought a Gucci Jackie she’d worn about twenty times in three years, plus Alexander Wang and some Chanel. She asked whether she needed to take the Chanel somewhere to get it authenticated. You don’t. We do that here, on everything, before anything goes on the floor.

The hard part was never the money. It was the piece she called her first ever designer bag, and deciding that needing cash now beats saving it for a daughter she doesn’t have yet.

Our answer: don’t keep it for your baby. That’s twenty years away. B

The last comparable bag sold for $800. She wanted $600. We offered $300.

Not because it’s a bad bag. The inside has lip liner on it and the zipper has gone. What saves it is the gold and the crinkle, which hide wear better than almost any other finish, and that’s the only reason the number isn’t lower.

$400 if she consigned it and waited. $300 cash today. She took the $300.

Then we noticed her Rolex crown had fallen off. Which means every hand wash has the possibility of putting water straight into the movement, and another few weeks of that costs more to fix than the watch is worth.

She came in for a number. She left with $300 and Rolex advice.
