It's hard to believe, but we did it! We've survived our first-ever full-time holiday market that spanned 12 days (definitely a little harder than the song makes it out to be!). Going from teaching to the market to fulfilling online orders, all within the casual 18-hour workday, we somehow managed to make it to the point where we got to enjoy that ever-promised first round for ourselves. And, it was only made possible thanks to all of you!

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by and took the time to learn about our little business here, with special thanks to those who've decided to join us. We can't wait to see where in the world you or your traveler ends up next!

And like all adventures, we are still horizon-bound, so we were incredibly excited that some of you decided to become some of our latest researchers and developers of our newest collection and invention: Breathe!

And, for all of you in the Boston area, we hope you all join us this coming summer as we organize city-wide events such as scavenger and treasure hunts in the exploration of our next great business frontier: Outpost! Did someone say brick-and-mortar? A gathering space welcoming to all with the sole purpose of discovery, the discovery of oneself with Age of Enlightenment-inspired events within our doors, and the discovery of Boston and New England with city/region-wide adventures beyond our doors, all while enjoying a nice cup of coffee/tea and possibly some french fries!?!-(Some dreams never die!)

Once more thank you to all of you who've made this possible (p.s. again that's all of you!) and as we Freya Stark most brilliantly puts it,

“Surely, of all the wonders of the world, the horizon is the greatest.”

Happy Holidays, Happy Travels, and an Endless Cheers,
Matt

XVII. ATLAS X Journal Prompt

Inspired by knowing the future sits in my classroom today.

Martin Luther King,

“We Are Not Makers of History. We Are Made by History."

Today’s Journal Prompt- An Excerpt from my final lecture to my students.

As I have said before, history derives from the ancient Greek word ἱστορία meaning inquiry or knowledge gained through investigation. The one constant in this world and the root of all inquiry is change. And, as with all change, something or someone powers it. Every society throughout history has devised its own grand social experiment to test its own theory of change, theory of power. Some argued that magical royal blood possessed the power to affect change. Some argued that change came from a higher power, such as a god or a goddess. But, in our society in our experiment, we've gone with the people having the power as our theory of change. You possess the power of change.

There will be forces in the world so afraid of you and your power that they will try to convince you that you do not have it and sometimes the sheer weight of change and the world may seem impossible for you to lift. But, please remember that the true power within you is that there is a 'you' and the generation of you. You are never alone for as history has shaped you, it has shaped an army of you, a generation of you. This tremendous power of change has been passed from generation to generation and you are part of a long, proud, and powerful lineage of change agents like A. Philip Randolph and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. These past 15 months you have been living history, and from history, we know that whenever our world experiences unprecedented times, it generates unprecedented power. Power to reimagine and rebuild a better, more perfect world. Like the “greatest generations” that have come before you, history and its circumstances have deemed you and the generation of you worthy of such power, and I, for one, cannot wait to see how you choose to wield it!

Prompt: How has living the history of this unprecedented time shaped you, and with this mighty power of change entrusted by history to you and the generation of you, how do you choose to wield it?

⛰ATLAS x Journal Prompt:

Many of you may be unaware of this, but in addition to starting and running Tribute Products, I also teach High School History here in Massachusetts. And, in this crazy COVID world that we are all surviving in right now, we, teachers, have spent many long hours reimagining how to teach in this new brave remote world. One simple solution I built was starting an Instagram History account with its own curriculum for my students to supplement our current hybrid learning model as I figured they were more likely to check their Instagram accounts than their school email accounts. Posting daily to this History Instagram account and seeing the positive reaction from my students has made me realize we may be an opportunity to do the same with our business Instagram account.

So, in hopes of closing the distance in our socially distant lives and finding connection in isolation, I want to introduce our new series, the ever classic and simple journal prompt. For this series, I will post a picture or video accompanied by a simple journal prompt that any of you are more than welcome to use for your next journal entry, as a conversation starter with a friend or family, or even feel free to DM us with your thoughts or, if your feeling really bold, comment below to engage in a community-wide conversation.

Without further ado, our first of hopefully many journals prompts: The Blue Pale Dot- Carl Sagan

On February 14, 1990, the spacecraft Voyager 1 took its final photo while orbiting Saturn. Rather than, taking another photo of Saturn’s Rings, Carl Sagan requested that point the camera back to earth and take a photo and with that, our entire world, all of collective history, was captured within a single pixel on a single photo to paraphrase Carl Sagan from his photo above!

As that photo did with a single-pixel for our world if you had to capture the essence of our world and all of humanity with a single photo, sound, memory, story, or moment, etc., what would it be?

⛰️ Tribute X Atlas: A World of Travels for Valentine's Day! - https://mailchi.mp/dab2ac9f3d06/tribute-x-atlas-a-world-of-travels-for-valentines-day

Believe it or not, I invented the Atlas as a Valentine's gift for my girlfriend, Gretchen, back in college. Because I was too broke to get her something "nice", I did what every 'empty-pocket' traveler would and let my scarcity inspire my creativity!

So, I got her a small vial and told her to put her world of travels in it by collecting a small pebble or seashell from everywhere she goes!

IT'S OFFICIAL, WE ARE ON THE GROMMET!

Last summer, our business allowed us to take a trip across the country to sell in markets in LA as well as giving us a great opportunity to see good friends out in New York, San Fransico, LA, and Colorado. During that trip, we were approached by the online retailer The Grommet who expressed interest in collaborating and offering our Atlas Travel Journals and Atlas Kits on their platform.

Seven months later, I'm happy to report it's official! We are now up, live, and available to all on The Grommet. This wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support we've received from our friends and family. And, of course, a massive thank you to our now thousands of customers who were kind enough to stop at our booth during one of the many farmer/artisan markets we've participated in across New England over these last two years, listened to our pitch about a simple idea of a new way to collect and document their travels, and ultimately decided to join us on this crazy adventure by buying one of our travel journals or kits for themselves or a loved one!

So, tonight we will be having a cup of ice cream and a beer in our self-isolation as a TRIBUTE to all of you as thanks for all your support and we can't wait to see where this adventure takes us next!

Cheers,

Matt and Gretchen
