From record foot traffic to major increases in bar and restaurant spending, this summer showed what can happen when we give people more reasons to come Downtown, stay Downtown, and experience the city in new ways.

New Opportunities for Local Brands.

The opening of Madrugada: No Grey Area at 39 Winter St came from a simple, yet powerful idea: connect a growing local brand with an opportunity to bring life to a vacant Downtown storefront.

Working with the DBA, Gazit Horizons opened its Winter St retail space to Madrugada, giving the Boston-founded streetwear brand an opportunity to test a physical retail concept in the heart of Downtown.

From there, Madrugada founder Nan and her team transformed the space into No Grey Area, bringing years of work building a brand with deep Boston and Roxbury roots into a new retail setting.

Then, at 10 AM on August 8, the doors opened:

Friends, family, customers, and community partners came Downtown to celebrate and support a homegrown brand taking its next step.

It’s a great example of what can happen when property owners, local businesses, and community partners work together to create new opportunities and activate Downtown storefronts.

Through DBA’s Level Up Downtown Initiative, partnerships like this help match available spaces with local businesses and creative concepts that strengthen Downtown. We're giving people new reasons to visit, shop, and come back.

Boston’s young artists are taking over Downtown Crossing 🎤🔥

Youth Fest! returns Wednesday, August 12, for a free afternoon of music, creativity, and youth-led talent in the heart of Downtown Boston.

Now in its fifth year, Youth Fest! is Boston’s first festival created by, with, and for Boston youth. The lineup will feature original performances from Boston Music Project’s Music Workforce Apprenticeship teens alongside youth organizations from across the city.

Expect rock and funk bands, brass ensembles, classical strings, DJs, martial arts performances, youth vendors, community partners, and more.

AI STARTUPS ARE GETTING FREE OFFICE SPACE DOWNTOWN.

Synergy and BUILD617 are teaming up to provide selected early-stage AI startups with rent-free office space for at least one year.

BUILD617 will select the companies, giving founders a shared place to work, exchange ideas, and build their businesses right here in Boston.

And this is bigger than one building. Downtown has the space. Boston has the talent. Other property owners are also exploring ways to welcome emerging AI companies, while the Massachusetts AI Coalition and leaders like Cory Munchbach and Ryan Durkin work to grow that momentum.

For Downtown, that could mean new companies filling underused spaces, more people supporting local businesses, and more energy throughout the neighborhood.

The pieces are coming together for a new tech ecosystem in the heart of Downtown—and this could be just the beginning.
