The advice was always buy, don’t lease solar—until now.

Homeowners can no longer claim the 30% solar tax credit in 2026, but companies can still claim it through 2027. Meaning homeowners can still capitalize on the credit by claiming the savings through pre-paid third-party ownership (TPO) financing.

Basically, you pay for your system upfront—at a discount, thanks to the tax credit—lease your panels for about 5-6 years, then take over ownership.

Based on EnergySage Intel’s latest Marketplace Report, solar quotes for pre-paid leases and pre-paid power purchase agreements (PPAs) were 39% and 57% cheaper upfront per kilowatt-hour, respectively, than cash options in the first half of 2026.

Experts project the national average for gas could climb from $3.85 today to around $4.85 a gallon by 2040—a 26% jump driven by the global energy crisis and policy rollbacks on EV adoption and fuel-efficiency standards.
