Possibly a controversial gem show observation.
I just got back from the East Coast Gem Show, almost exactly a year after I went for the first time when Modern Mineral was forming.
Walking through this year felt completely different.
There were thousands and thousands of pieces. Tables full of minerals, towers, polished shapes and familiar material.
And I bought very little.
A year ago, I think I was still impressed by access and having so much available to choose from.
A year later, abundance doesn’t impress me much.
I want the thing I haven’t seen 40 times already - An unusual formation. Exceptional color. Strange geometry. Something with presence. And I want it at a price that makes sense for both me and my customers.
There were beautiful things at the show, and I met some lovely vendors that I hope to stay in touch with. But the biggest thing I came home with might be confirmation of what Modern Minerals direction is.
I don’t want more inventory.
I want a better edit.
