Did you know Sidney Poitier helped inspire the look of DC Comics’ John Stewart?

When artist Neal Adams helped create John Stewart in 1971, he drew inspiration from Poitier’s strong, intelligent, commanding presence. That choice helped give one of DC’s earliest major Black superheroes a look that felt grounded and instantly authoritative.

John Stewart would go on to become one of the most recognizable Green Lanterns in comic book history, especially for generations who later knew him through animation.

It’s one of those connections that makes you look at both men differently. Sidney Poitier’s influence reached far beyond film.
